A New Haven man and his 2-year-old granddaughter sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries after the car they were driving collided head on with a dump truck loaded with stone along Foxon Road in East Haven early this afternoon, police said.

According to East Haven Police Deputy Chief John Mannion, at about 12:20 p.m this afternoon, East Haven Police and Fire Department members responded to a report of a "serious car vs. dump truck accident" in the area of 519 Foxon Road.

Mannion said the police department's accident investigation determined that a passenger car, operated by Juan Ortuno, 63, of 76 Terrace St. in New Haven, was traveling eastbound on Foxon Road (Route 80) "when it drifted left into the westbound lane."

"A dump truck, loaded with stone, was traveling westbound and its operator was unable to avoid the collision," Mannion said.

The driver of the truck was Henry Perez, 55, of 114 Newell Ave. in Bristol.

"The car struck the truck head on," Mannion said.

The deputy chief added that Ortuno and his granddaughter, Geovanna Alarcon, 2, — who was a passenger in the vehicle — were treated at the scene and then transported to Yale New Haven hospital for serious but not life threatening injuries.

Perez was treated at St. Raphael’s hospital for neck pain.

"The car appears to be a total loss," Mannion said. "Both vehicles were towed from the scene."

He added that Ortuno was issued a ticket for failure to drive in the established lane.

Geovanna will turn 3 years old on Nov. 29.
