Photos: Hagaman Offers Science You Can Taste (Sort Of)

A visit from the Mad Science Group brought learning and special effects to youngsters.

The dry ice in hot water began to emit smoke and Kelly Guarnieri blew it towards a room full of youngsters at Hagaman LIbrary. She asked what it taste likes.

"It tastes like donuts," said one child. All the kids agreed enthusiastically.

"You guys are the first group that tasted anything," Guarnieri said. "Did you guys eat donuts before you came here?"

"No," said the chorus of kids. Gurnieri brought the smoke around again, and this time the kids agreed that the smoke had no taste. So much for donuts.

On Wednesday afternoon, more than a dozen kids at the library learned about science through the aid smoky special effects and a rocket launched from outside the library. Stratford-based Mad Science Group, which performs at birthdays and other events, put on the show.

One of the highlights was creating Halloween-inspired smoke from a bucket of dry ice. Guarnieri asked if the kids knew of any movie special effects.

"Like someone flying," said one boy.

"Like Indiana Jones," said a child in a Superman shirt.

"Like Indiana Jones," seconded another.

"Like Indiana Jones," a third said.

Undeterred, another child said "Like Batman."
