Pet of the Week: Mooner

This young male cat may only have three legs, but he is without a doubt a grey little ball of feline fun!

Mooner is one amazing little kitty.

The East Haven Animal Shelter began caring for the one-year-old gray male cat in late July.

At that time, Mooner was suffering from serious wounds to his stomach and leg that apparently were inflicted by some sort of animal.

His original owners had hoped he would heal naturally from the attack, but it eventually became clear he needed professional veterinarian treatment.

Unfortunately, the family was unable to afford the medical care he needed, and so they surrendered him to East Haven Animal Control to ensure he receive the treatment he required.

Since then, Mooner has made a remarkable recovery, East Haven Animal Control Officer Kristina Ruszczyk said.

"He's a good guy," Ruszczyk told Patch this morning as she played with Mooner at the shelter. "He's one of the best behaved cats."

Although Mooner was recently required to have his back left leg amputated due to his injuries, it hasn't dampened the playful cat's spirit.

"I mean, it was like nothing even happened at all," Ruszczyk said.

Mooner does still have his staples in from the surgery. But Ruszczyk said once he is fully healed — other than remaining an indoor cat — he will require no special care or treatment due to the amputation.

"He gets along just fine with three legs," she said.

The animal control officer added that Mooner is "very social with other cats," and would do well in a home that already had another animal.

"He had another male cat here at the shelter who was his buddy, and they were friends. But he was recently adopted out," Ruszczyk said.

And now, Mooner is ready for his turn to find a new forever home.

"Mooner's pretty much one of everybody's favorites," she said of the officers and volunteers who work at the shelter.

"He's just a really great cat," Ruszczyk said.

Also, is still looking for a forever home. Contact the shelter if you think you might be the one.
