Michael Lieto Candlelight Vigil: 'My Brother Was A Hero' [VIDEO]

Mike Lieto's family, friends and neighbors honored his memory during a candlelight vigil at the East Haven Town Green on Wednesday night.

Family, friends, neighbors and community members gathered together Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of former East Haven resident Michael Lieto.

Lieto died Tuesday afternoon from injuries he sustained during a fight alongside  his two brothers — Dion, 25, and Robert, 26, — and two other men that occurred on Maplevale Road earlier that day.

Dion and Robert were also injured during the altercation, which reportedly occurred due to a dispute over a stolen necklace, but the injuries were not life-threatening.

As he addressed supporters at the vigil Wednesday evening, Robert said Michael was trying to help out Dion and himself during Tuesday's altercation when he was fatally stabbed.

"My brother was a hero," he said, as he held a candle up to the evening sky in Mike's honor.

Aaron Powell, 21, and a 17-year-old juvenile male were arrested Tuesday shortly after the incident.

Powell — who has confessed to stabbing Lieto, according to a New Haven Register report — has been charged with first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a dangerous weapon, and second-degree breach of peace.

Powell was arraigned in New Haven court on Wednesday. He being held on a $1 million bond.

So who's responsible for the damage and the mess to the towns gazebo?
Shawn Hopkinson November 15, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Did you really just say that!?!?!? If there is any mess I myself will personally go clean it up.....Show some damn compassion for a community in mourning. Parents lost a child, Siblings lost a brother, A girl lost the love of her life, People lost a friend they cared about.....You, You have lost your mind.......Show some compassion for a community in mourning......

Wow - really?
Giueseppe Portabello November 15, 2012 at 02:35 PM
PB should really have been investigated for his actions during his career. If you look at his posts, he defends the police that were arrested and plead GUILTY for thier crimes. He said they were innocent, yet they ultimately plead guilty. He makes racist comments on patch constantly. He must think he is right with his views, but in reality he shows the taxpayers of east haven what they were paying for while he was a police officer, a racist, heartless pig to say the least.

Thank you all.. there is always one uneducated person in every group
Giueseppe Portabello November 15, 2012 at 02:37 PM
plus he always has had a severe inferiority complex. And he probably doesn't have any children of his own. Any person with children would be more compassionate to the situation.

Peter Brennan- Your time will come and you will have to experience a tragic situation that will leave you empty and feeling alone and scared... I hope people treat you the same way you have treated them. You are a disgusting person. May your son, brother, friend and boyfriend rest in peace. My heart aches for all of you.

Any cop in Connecticut familiar with these Leito's will tell you it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
Lise Cavallaro November 15, 2012 at 04:17 PM
and that makes killing someone okay? Granted, I didn't know the family but I hardly think this is the time of the place for comments like that.

Dear Lieto Family and Friends, You have our profound sympathies at this very difficult time. It is a sorry state of affairs that a necklace would be a catalyst to a young man losing his life. Hopefully others will use this experience as a life lesson and will think before they act. My heart goes out to you. Take care and God Bless.

You are pathetic!!...I would only hope that someone would comment the same thing if you lose someone close to you!
Dan November 16, 2012 at 07:43 PM
Don't take this tragedy and make it an opportunity to bad mouth the victim and his family. Whether or not he or his brothers are saints is not the issue. And also, don't take this as an opportunity to demonize New Haven or a particular group of people. We know there are a number of town residents (hopefully small) that would like to turn back the clock to a time when racial profiling and brutality were accepted, but guess what folks? It is not going to happen, so if you don't like it move somewhere without a Constitutution or find a DeLorean and flash back to Alabama circa 1950.

Wow..really??? A young man lost his life, and all you care about is the mess to the gazebo? SMH..
DeAnna R November 16, 2012 at 10:45 PM
wow. you must be the most insensitive person who walks the earth. not one mother/father/sibling should ever have to endure what this family is going thru..No parent should ever have to bury their child. Please look inside yourself to feel sympathy for his family, his girlfriend Brianna and his friends. No one deserves to die this way (unless someone takes a life unjustifiably) regardless of their prior actions or lifestyle choice. Did you know that Dion Lieto, (who was beaten in the brawl with a blunt object) had a birthday this week?? Instead of celebrating a birth, no matter how many years ago, this family is tragically mourning...Mikey, we will always remember you...you live in everyone's heart that you've touched no matter how short of time that may have been...Please watch over your family, brianna & your friends...#Stoptheviolence

pay no mind to negative judgmental ex cops who never nothing better to do than be mad and talk like a fool during this time. no class. no respect. get a real job or something
Kelsey Consiglio November 20, 2012 at 04:29 PM
im sorry maybe im wrong but doesn't having a CAREER as a detective/police officer for 35yrs count as a "real job"? You must not have any of the "respect" that u speak of if u consider the men and women who serve and protect us as not having "real jobs"
