Malloy: Tomorrow's Windy Weather Could Bring Down Trees, Branches

The governor says higher than normal winds could bring down trees and branches damaged during last month's Nor'easter.

Uh oh.

Just days after many Connecticut residents saw their power restored after the , Gov. Dannel P. Malloy warned Thursday that tomorrow’s windy forecast could bring down trees and branches already weakened from the last storm, possibly causing even more power outages.

“The weather forecast is calling for winds of 15-30 miles per hour with locally higher gusts,” Malloy said in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

“Normally, these types of winds would not be of concern, but with the condition of trees following the October snowstorm, they are likely to have some impact tomorrow and I’m urging residents to take precaution if they’re planning to be outside tomorrow," he said.

Malloy’s office said that the governor has been in contact with the state’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security to formulate a response to any power outages and also to urge both Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating to take the proper precautions should outages occur.

More than 831,000 CL&P customers lost power as a result of the last storm, with many without power for more than a week, and numerous communities and residents throughout Connecticut have complained about CL&P’s preparations and response to the last series of outages.

“Now that power is back on across our state, we expect the utility companies will be extra vigilant about responding to any new outages, particularly as a number of residents just got the power back on recently,” Malloy said.

Tomorrow’s forecast calls for westerly winds building from early morning Friday, then peaking later in the afternoon before subsiding in the evening, according to the governor’s office.
