Josephine Mancini: 'We Were Lucky'

She and her mother remember Hurricane Gloria, and they say this was worse.

When the Mancinis were notified that the burglar alarm had gone off at their beach house at 10 a.m. Sunday, they thought someone had broken in.

"We thought somebody intruded, but it was Irene that intruded," said Adriana Mancini.

The waves from Hurricane Irene smashed the front windows and drenched the living room at their house on Cosey Beach Avenue. But they consider themselves fortunate.

"This is nothing compared to the people who have lost their homes," said her daughter, Josephine Mancini. "We are lucky."

The Mancinis remember Hurricane Gloria in 1985, the last hurricane to hit their beach house. This was far worse, they said.

Not only was there more damage to their house this time, but the waves piled heaps of debris between their house and their neighbor’s.

"We don’t know where it came from," said Adriana.
