Get Ready: East Haven Fall Festival Is Sept. 7-9

The Mayor's Office provides an overview of this year's annual three-day event on the East Haven Town Green.

The following is a press release submitted by the East Haven Mayor's Office.

. and the East Haven Fall Festival Planning Committee have announced that this year’s event, now in its 21st year, will be featuring the 50th Anniversary performance of the nationally renowned “The Duprees”.

The Saturday concert will just be the centerpiece of a for the entire family on the .

The festival will be held during the weekend of September 7th, 8th and 9th.  The event is coordinated by EH Fall Festival, Inc. as a cooperative effort with the Mayor’s office and the .

In 1962 The Duprees remade Jo Stafford’s 1950 ballad, “You Belong To Me” and it immediately became a national hit and the group’s first million seller. The hits continued in the years ahead with “My Own True Love” and “Have You Heard” to name just a few.

While the weekend of entertainment will be a diversified mix of various forms of local and regional talent, the Friday night feature act will again return to the sounds of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with the Festival’s debut of “The Bronx Wanderers”.

The group recreates the magic of the era, with a mix of new material along with all the favorites of doo-wop and rock and roll. Rhapsody will be opening the festival on Friday beginning at 6:30 pm.

The feature entertainment once again this year is being presented through the generosity of David McDermott Auto Group and Town Fair Tire, who have been major contributors to the Festival for 14 and 12 years respectfully. In addition to these long time contributors, the Festival this year has also received major sponsorships from PMA Companies and Talmadge Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

“Each year, I keep wondering how the Festival Planning Committee is going to top their previous year’s shows and they continue to never disappoint. Once again this could not be accomplished without the generosity of our entire business community as this event continues to be the best free festival in the State and with our Fireworks Day, one of East Haven’s signature events.” stated Mayor Maturo.

“Back in 1999, through the generosity of David McDermott, our Festival began to offer a new and exciting level of nationally known entertainment.  For the many years following, we have been blessed with numerous other corporate sponsors that service the East Haven area, to continue to take this event even further, as we now have major entertainment on both festival nights”, commented Mayor Maturo. “Whenever we have reached out to our business community, for any reason, the response has always been exceptionally generous. Certainly with their continued demonstration of community support, I encourage all our citizens to make every effort to patronize them as often as possible.” the Mayor concluded.

Saturday afternoon’s entertainment is again expected to feature former national champions, The East Haven High School Yellow Jacket Marching Band.

In addition the Festival will present various local acts which include Karate and Taekwondo demonstrations and Vocals by Karen and the East Haven Arts Commission. Leading up to The Duprees show, the afternoon will continue with The Wango Tango Band and the popular sounds of Prime Time.

On Sunday afternoon, the Festival, will be presenting a full afternoon of entertainment featuring a variety of different acts of both local and international flavor, featuring the diverse Latin sounds of Sonido Libre. This Latin music band based out of Connecticut will be performing music genres such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia and Mambo.

Also appearing will be the ever-popular Jim Lawson’s Big Band and closing this year’s festival will be the very distinctive sounds of The Bernadettes.

“The Fall Festival continues to provide East Haven with one of our most exciting weekends as large crowds come to our historic green to enjoy the sounds of nationally known entertainment and some great food from area vendors. As with our other signature event, the annual fireworks, the crowds are made up of mostly families from our town and the surrounding areas, enjoying themselves greatly and without any problems whatsoever.” concluded the Mayor.

The Festival, which began as a two-day event in 1992, has continued to grow by attracting bigger sponsors, which has made the event the best free festival entertainment venue in this State.

In addition to the live entertainment, the weekend will feature a wide variety of restaurant booths, an arts and crafts exhibition, and carnival rides for small children.

Sunday morning will feature what has become a very popular Classic Car Show. The festival now in its twenty-first year continues to attract crowds of all ages, including seniors and children.

The “Corporate Hospitality Tent”, which will be open to corporate sponsors, during the entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, will house the Business Expo on Saturday afternoon. Again, this year the business fair will be coordinated and run by the East Haven Chamber of Commerce.  Anyone interested in obtaining a spot can contact the Chamber at (203) 467-4305.

This year’s event will again feature an area of the green, which will be titled, the “Teen Corner” under the direction of the Town’s Youth Coordinator, Bob Petrucelli.  The “Teen Corner”, which will be open Friday, September 7th and Saturday, September 8th from 6:00 – 10:30pm.

In addition, the area will be staffed by several other adults. The “Teen Corner” will include various activities for youth, including a Mobile HD Video Game Trailer and 3 Lane Bungee Run. A teen Karaoke contest on Friday and a Rock Climbing Wall on Saturday.

In addition to the businesses mentioned above, the event continues to be supported by corporate sponsorships and individual contributions.

Anyone interested in helping with this effort, or for any further information on the Festival, should contact Frank Gentilesco, Jr. in the Mayor’s office, at 468-3204 or email him at eh.gentilesco@att.net.

Compared to other towns' entertainment, its sad East Haven cannot step up to the plate and do a little better.

Love the EH Fall Festival! Look forward to it every year! But I do not see a mention of the 5k road race & the kids fun run! This is such a great community event, I hope it's in the plans.

heard the couldn't find anyone to coordinate the road race, after the people who did it since its inception decided to step down. Some folks stepped forward to do it but, once they realized how big a job it really is, they backed away. Too bad...

Susan, maybe you could tell us what other town has had better entertainment than what has been here since the festivals inception. Ever year we had BIG NAME entertainers, not just local tribute bands. I'd be interested to hear what towns you're talking about. Our sponsors and festival organizers do a terrific job in setting this up and if you feel that it's not up to your expectations, DON"T GO!

Mitch: You are correct that at this time, there will be no 5K road race or fun run associated with this year's festival. The Mayor's Office confirmed that for me earlier today. The festival committee is hoping to bring the race back next year. Just an FYI. I'll be looking to post another more comprehensive preview article on this yaer's event in the coming days.

What a shame. It is a lot of work but I have been running in this race for many years and it is great to see the community come out and others come back to EH to participate. . Also as a PE teacher in town I looked forward to watching my students run in the kids fun run as well as my own son. I hope it is a priority to bring it back next year.
