The case against Aaron Powell, the 21-year-old suspect charged with first-degree manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of former East Haven resident Michael Lieto, has been continued until early next month, according to a New Haven Register report.
Lieto was fatally injured during a fight with his brothers and two other males, which occurred along Maplevale Road on Nov. 13.
Michael Lieto, 21, received at least one stab wound and Robert Lieto, 27, was also injured. Both were transported to Yale New Haven Hospital. The third brother Dion Lieto, 25, was "assaulted with an unknown blunt object, but was able to assist and is cooperating with police investigators."
Later on that afternoon, Michael Lieto died as a result of injuries sustained from the assault, according to police. Robert Lieto was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.
A short time after the incident, police arrested Powell and a 17-year-old juvenile male who was with him at the time of the alleged assault.
In addition to manslaughter, Powell is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a dangerous weapon and second-degree breach of peace.
The Register reports the Powell's family claims he was acting in self defense.
Shortly after his death, Michael Lieto's family members, friends and neighbors held a candlelight vigil on the East Haven Town Green to honor his memory.
