Since Tropical Storm Irene caused serious damage to beach homes in , most elected officials have supported , but now a major Connecticut newspaper has questioned if that is prudent.
In an editorial over the weekend, the Hartford Courant said predictions of rising sea level in coming years make it likely that homes on Cosey Beach Avenue, some of which are on or over the high tide mark, will be damaged or destroyed by the next big storm.
The Courant noted that a recent report said sea level has risen eight inches since 1880 and is likely to continue to rise, and that Irene, which caused significant damage, wasn’t even a hurricane when it made landfall in Connecticut.
