12th Annual Latino Expo This Weekend

Get It One Way or the Other... Expo - Meet with the Experts Conference - Listen to the Experts Cultural Stage - Enjoy the Live Music and Dance Performances

The 12th Annual Latino Expo is this weekend, Sat. and Sun. 12n - 5 pm. May 5 - 6 at the East Haven High School, 35 Wheelbarrow Lane, East Haven, CT. Free Admission

There are 4 areas for you to visit.

Area I.  When you walk in the building, you will see our Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity brothers.  Lambda Theta Phi is celebrating its 36th year and is the oldest Latin fraternity in the country.  Our brothers have been volunteering at the Latino Expos for the last 5 years.  They are wonderful mentors for the young children.

This year, they will be helping you discover your innate skills sets. We will have four computers in the lobby set up for you to test yourself.  This test will help define the things you love to do, what makes you proud when you do them and most of all, what careers need your skills!

You can even take it one step further and look at the careers and see if you might need some more education to be successful in those fields.

The brothers will be right there to help you manage the program if you run into problems.

The next areas you will want to visit are the Expo and the Conference.  Both are downstairs.  The Expo is in the Atrium Cafeteria and the Conference is in the Technology Center.  In between both will be the Hot 93.7 street team!  They will be mixing it up and getting everyone dancing.

Area II. In the Expo there are lots of activities and stuff to do for all ages.  First, you will notice the News 8 cooking demo areas.  Neil Fuentes - the Singing Chef and an East Haven resident -  will be presenting 2 cooking demos each day.  Neil has appeared on CT Style 30 times!  He is also one of 3 national celebrities on the Food Network representing Sabra foods.  Sabra will be launching webisodes featuring Neil’s recipes and Neil's singing talent.  Neil is also the lead singer of Sonido Libre.  His 11 person Latin jazz band will be featured on Sunday from 3:45 - 4:45.

For the little children, the Hagaman Memorial Library will be sponsoring the “Reading Princess”.  The Princess will be reading beloved children’s stories in English and Spanish.  The library will be registering new borrowers, promoting the summer reading program, expanding their adult titles and introducing new magazines.

The Town of East Haven’s Police department is looking for recruits.  They would love to speak with everyone interested in a career in law enforcement. Returning military personnel may not know about the need in East Haven’s police department and the depth of the hiring opportunities. Others will be stopping by the Police booth to sit on their Harley Davidson motorcycle and take pictures. Everyone’s invited to come and get your Harley On!

East Haven Rotary Club members will be meeting parents with young children for their Amber alert program. The Rotary Club is bringing information about their organization and applications for new memberships.

The Lions Club of East Haven’s members will be providing free eye screenings for 2 hours, Sunday, 1 - 3pm. Diabetes and other life threatening diseases have been discovered by the eye screenings the Lions Club provides. They too are looking for new members.

At 15, many Latinas have a Quinceañera. The ‘Quiñci Corner of CT’ will feature gowns and accessories. One lucky winner will win a dream gown.  Sponsored by Fashions by Trevette, Ivette has native knowledge of all Hispanic Cultural Events and knows how to outfit the entire party.

The variety and depth of information in every booth is amazing. At the Latino Expo, you can meet with banks, financial planners, view and purchase original art including oil paintings, sip on a virgin Piña Colada, meet with CHESLA and see how a student loan is only 5.99% through the state’s program vs. the Federal Parent Plus loans at 7.99%, meet with the CT Housing Finance Authority about buying a home, learn about becoming a foster parent, get insurance for you home, car, business and health, meet with dentists and learn about oral care, become a model, register to vote, apply for careers and jobs, check out the very latest in cellular products, meet with colleges and meet with recruiters from 3 different military divisions, all looking for people that want to become officers.

Area  III. The Conference is offering one hour sessions with experts in their fields in a panel format. On Saturday, Starting with Healthcare at 12:40 - 1:40, Jobs at 2:10 - 3:10 and Education at 3:40 - 4:40. On Sunday, the conference begins with 2 workshops; How to Establish Credit, presented in English and Spanish by the U.S. Small Business Administration at 12:40 and 1:10. Wrapping up the two days is a panel on business.  The entired conference is in English except for the Credit workshop at 1:10 on Sunday. We will be taping the sessions for playback on Public Access for all to see and learn what is provided at the Latino Expo.

Area IV.  Our Cultural Stage will make people stop going to Disney to see dolls dancing and singing,“It’s a Small World After All”!  Who needs Epcot?  Right here in CT we have so many folkloric groups from so many countries, we are rich with cross cultural experiences.

2 days of Live Music and Dance from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Peru and Columbia, folkloric, Latin jazz, Latin rock, hip hop, reggaeton, R & B and pop has something to please everyone. Students from East Haven high school will also be showcasing their talents.

This is the largest multicultural showcase in the Northeast!

Whether you are Hispanic or not, it does not matter. You will enjoy the Latino Expo.  We offer two days of information and resources you may not know you are missing.  Our doors and hearts are open to everyone.  It is a true, loving, diverse experience.

Mayor Maturo will be present both days of the Latino Expo and wants to meet everyone.  Please bring your family and friends. Discover the 12th annual Latino Expo

If you have aspirations but don’t know how to get the resources to fulfill your goals, you can find many resources this weekend that will help you.  When Hartford became the home for so many refugees from Bosnia, the new refugees came to the Latino Expo, year after year, to learn what resources are available.

Don’t forget, our opening ceremony will begin on Saturday at 12n.  Enjoy!

Lise, again, with all due respect, Maturo is a criminal. The abusive police officers he supports are also criminals.
Becki Pastor May 3, 2012 at 06:42 pm
i merely objected to her referring to people and their culture in comparison to a Disney ride. The woman who runs the expo is not the savviest of folks...but I am going and I an encouraging others to go.....not being negative but am slightly offended...big difference......and I dont have to be 100% behind something or 100% against something....and believe me there are some pretty great things happening in East Haven. The expo can hopefully be one of them.
Lise Cavallaro May 3, 2012 at 06:45 pm
And how do you know that the police officers that will be at the expo have been abusive? Obviously you do not support Mayor Maturo and that is certainly your right. But, please don't go around touting people as criminals when they haven't been convicted or found guilty in a court of law.
Starfishgirl May 3, 2012 at 07:30 pm
Lise, Webster's defines the word, (tout) 1. to praise highly.
You are mistaken.

Not everyone can afford a trip to TX, so what's wrong with attending a nice event in our own town?
Lise Cavallaro May 3, 2012 at 07:49 pm
Hahahahaha. I'm not going to participate in your foolish behavior.
Connie May 3, 2012 at 08:07 pm
Wow, Starfishgirl, again throwing out unwarranted accusations at people.
Lise Cavallaro May 3, 2012 at 08:12 pm
Connie, Isn't it hysterical?
Starfishgirl May 3, 2012 at 10:40 pm
Thank you East Patch for allowing all of us to express ourselves on your forum.
Bob Fawkes May 4, 2012 at 12:42 pm
This is Taco Joe's gig; his response to the "Latin American Community". As such, it would behoove Taco Joe to attend this event.
Reporters will be present with microphones and cameras, asking pointed questions of Taco Joe, not the least of which will be his ill gotten pension from 1997-2007. The man will be on the spot, so to speak. Let us hope he does not embarrass our town again.
Flowers May 4, 2012 at 05:37 pm
I'll attend if I have the opportunity. Singing and dancing Latinos are certainly preferable to the speeding and uninsured variety we have become familiar with. I hope Mayor Joe shows up. It would be a nice gesture and essentially all he's ever done is make one untimely reference to Tacos. I'll even spring for a Pina Coloda for Mayor Joe.. As for me I'm going with the Pina Colada.
WOW!! Nice way to fit that negative stereotype in there "speeding and uninsured variety we have become familiar with". so glad your thinking isn't back asswords.

REALLY!! It doesn't matter who is responsible for the Expo coming to East Haven. It is something positive happening here. I hope the hard work that goes into an event like this is appreciated, and enjoyed by all!

Julie, arbentz really needs to be suspended -- just taking up space with useless babble.
DonnaR May 6, 2012 at 02:39 am

DonnaR May 6, 2012 at 02:40 am
Painting with quite a wide brush aen't ya
DonnaR May 6, 2012 at 02:41 am
Really, Mooroon
cheryl May 6, 2012 at 01:29 pm
the police officers have not been proven guilty so how can you say they are criminals,,thats putting the horse before the carriage isnt it. they have been accused and now they need their chance to prove their innocence or have you been made a judge and jury.
cheryl May 6, 2012 at 01:36 pm
so now are you stereotyping our police officers, isnt that wrong just like stereotyping latinos..but i guess its okay when when you do it,,excuse me but your ignorance is showing
Michele Antisdel May 6, 2012 at 02:04 pm
There are several people who should be suspended, not just Arbentz. Really people, the hatred and negativity that spews out of every post that you put on Patch is pathetic. It seems that some on here sit by their computer all day long like vultures just waiting for a new article to come out so they can find some little thing to latch on to and trash it to pieces. Really, what has happened in your lives to make you so angry and mean all the time. Again, very sad and pathetic.
Starfishgirl May 6, 2012 at 09:00 pm
Arbenz should stay. His detractors should be suspended. Arbenz brings an intellectual, informed voice to this forum. Those who are unable to keep up with him call this hate. Arbenz is not
"spewing hatred". He won the debate. Don't be a spoiled sport, Michelle.
Rosie May 6, 2012 at 09:57 pm
Seeing you are so big on correcting everyone, that would be East HAVEN Patch, but good try!
Michele Antisdel May 7, 2012 at 12:08 am
@Starfishgirl: There was no debate to be won, and nothing worth "keeping up with", just childish banter, as usual. The same cast of characters have taken what should be a great media source for keeping residents informed on the latest, up-to-the-minute town news and have turned it into East Haven's version of the National Inquirer.
Starfishgirl May 7, 2012 at 12:58 am
Michelle, you are mistaken. And sadly, a poor loser. Re-defining or reconstructing reality will not alter the truth. Arbenz won the debate. Instead of congratulating him you ask for his exclusion. How tacky.
Starfishgirl May 7, 2012 at 01:03 am
I would argue that Taco Joe, Gallo, and his immoral, unruly minions are responsible for East Haven's diminishing image on the national stage. You kill the messenger, Michelle.
Don Charles May 7, 2012 at 02:39 am
Jacobo has a female clone who also just keeps coming back condemning everyone in the Police Dept. Starfish girl you are a waste.
Don Charles May 7, 2012 at 02:43 am
The biggest embarrassments to our town are you and your clone starfish girl.
You just keep going and going on the same mantra you sound more like one of your hero's Fidel Castro every time you post.
Starfishgirl May 7, 2012 at 03:35 am
Don Charles, when folks resort to personal attacks it is a sure sign they have lost. I will interpret your lack of sportsmanship as a compliment.

I had family visit from out of town to attend a Little League game down by the beach. They justRead More loved the entire area, especially the splash pad and the Sandpiper. It made me stop, look around and appreciate how fortunate we are in East Haven to have such a great place for so many activities.
CitizenVoice June 19, 2013 at 12:37 am
I've taken the kids to this for the past 3 years. It is such a great time. Will be there this yearRead More too.
Elissa Bass (Editor) June 18, 2013 at 10:29 am
Hi Sam - our events calendar was having technical hiccups this morning so our engineering team hasRead More temporarily disabled it so they can dive in and fix it. I apologize for that, and I will let you know when the calendar is back up and running so you can post. Thank you!!
Lise Cavallaro June 17, 2013 at 09:37 am
I'm disappointed with the new format. Doesn't seem to be very user friendly.
Melissa Simoes June 17, 2013 at 09:06 am
It's probably the same punks who broke into our cars over on Mansfield Grove AGAIN.... the policeRead More think its a bunch of teenagers because they take little things that are not of much value in any cars that arent locked..and are also doing things like slashing tires, etc all over town. They got into my car the same night! Hope you find your scooter
