Who Makes East Haven's Best Burger?

The Sandpiper continues to remain in the lead in this week's poll, but there's still time for you to cast your vote!

In its purest form it's just a beef patty on a bun.

But today's burgers are much more complex, with toppings that range from the classic lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup and mustard to items that include everything from bacon, mushrooms, jalapenos, avocado, chili or a fried egg.

You could even get a burger made from turkey meat or bison, or a veggie one, too.

When it comes down to it, you could put just about anything on a burger. And there are some great restaurants serving some incredible burgers right here in East Haven.

In this week's Readers' Choice contest, we want to know which place has the absolute best burger in town.

Vote for your favorite in the poll and, most importantly, rate and review the place in our directory (by clicking on the links below) and drop a comment on this article.

Here's our starter list (let us know if we're missing anyone):

Where was the burger in the picture made? Now that's a good looking burger.

Flowers: I'm not sure. It's an image that is in our Patch.com-wide files... However, if anyone has images from their restaurant's burgers — or as a customer from your favorite burger spot — and they'd like to upload them to this article, please do!

East Haven Needs a true "Burger Joint" thouhg
Beth May 15, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Isn't it ironic that we have Reader's Choice polls, yet we have so few businesses in East Haven it's really hard to even come up w/the list. Other than the fast food places, it's not like any of these places have burgers as their main draw.
Luigi (the original) May 15, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Beth, on the one hand I agree. However on the other, as places like the "heart attack grill" have found out, their name was more than fitting to their fare. That said, there does seem to me to be a nice selection of choices from restaurants that offer burgers as well as other, more healthy dishes (and not). A five guys might be nice in town, but perhaps so would another cardiologist..... just saying.
Doreen Boudreau Hausler May 15, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Beth, many of us have noticed the same trend with these polls. We don't have the businesses that completely fit these categories. The same was true with several other polls. We lack so many different types of businesses here. Sporting goods, spas,... So few real options. In any given week, I drive a half hour to get craft supplies or fabric. I drive the same distance to get bike repairs, or buy clothes. I'm sure everyone has a list of businesses that offer products and services they need, that we lack here. We need more economic development. Yes, Luigi... I see your points. Personally, I tend to eat healthy. That’s not the point of this poll, though. And, several of these options are a reach as a burger joint. With the sporting goods poll, I myself suggested Ocean State Job Lot be added to the poll, as another option. To be fair, I have actually found a few supplies there on occasion. But, that too was a stretch. Right? Wouldn't it be fantastic though, if we had a real burger joint in town? A real sporting goods store? Or, a real ______... I think so. One other note: In the poll above it mentions "incredible burgers right here in Branford" (since these polls are run in several towns...and I'm guessing it's a minor mistake that was missed when posted here...) It is true though. There are great burger places in Branford. That's where my family currently goes, when we want a burger locally. Anyone want to open a burger place in East Haven?
Luigi (the original) May 15, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Doreen, I understand where you are coming from with regards to "choices" especially as they pertain to polls, but in fairness a "burger joint" now a days is typically a fast food restaurant. There aren't really many places anywhere that specialize specifically to burgers that I can think of, maybe 5 guys, but that's a fast food joint I'd think. Just wondering if you can think of any others(?) That said (and asked) I agree some diversity of shopping options in this town, would be nice! :) ....... (and by the way, I do LIKE being agreeable occasionally).

Ruby Tuesdays in North Haven makes a good burger and so does Red Robin. For the first time in a long time I had Mcdonalds new Angus burger. I won't be doing that again! Awful! I still think the best burger is the one I make at home.

Everyone's comments seem to be echoing what I have said. East Haven needs more businesses!!! As far as burgers go, the Sandpiper is good for the beach end of town. But, again, in Foxon we can have Chinese or pizza.
Julie Weisberg (Editor) May 15, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Doreen: Good catch! Thanks, I appreciate that. It is a poll that is running on other area sites as well. I've made the change... and I am also working on an economic development update as well, so see where things stand. So, just an FYI there too! And thanks again!
Lise Cavallaro May 15, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Julie...maybe the economic developer should be reading these polls and the comments.
Matt Lyons May 15, 2012 at 02:15 PM
As for economic development, I am sad to announce that I am closing my retail store in East Haven. After two years of no support or response from the Chamber of commerce and the lack of local customers I decided to close and move to a more viable area.

Maybe i am worng but is this about the best BURGER in EH? Beachhead has a great one with a cold draft, Nice place to sit in the bar area and enjoy. Tell the girls Sam sent you, Still the same price but just say it anyway.
Sam Giglio May 15, 2012 at 04:05 PM
Sorry Wrong, I do it all the time hit the wrong keys.
Joe Higgins May 15, 2012 at 07:07 PM
Beach Head BY far
Joe Higgins May 15, 2012 at 07:09 PM
BeachHead is the best spot in town in my opinion.
Becki Pastor May 15, 2012 at 09:10 PM
Foxon Diner is a rare jewel...it's sort of a diamond in the rough, what they spared in decoration they have put in ingredients...it's always delicious whatever meal we have had...and on busy mornings we sometimes stop for to go stuff!! And really the BEST BURGER is not in any restaurant in town....it's the delicious burgers AT THE PIT!!! The concession stand at the pit is making some of the most delicious stuff in town!!

LBJ, I so agree, I had Jack in the Box in TX, and was back there almost every night after that. When it comes ot burgers or and sandwich, the to me have become king. If you ever see one stop and get a chicken club, I hate my share when in TX, but would gladly go for more.
Ann Della Camera May 16, 2012 at 04:38 AM
I fully agree with many above, I too go out of East Haven good burgers or Grilled chicken sandwiches. I also love Taco Bell, but they have been a bit lax lately in Branford. We need more places here in East Haven. Dress shops, Craft stores, fast foods, we have super Chinese. Sonic, Arrby's. Long John slivers, so many that are good.
Lise Cavallaro May 16, 2012 at 12:54 PM
Ann, how long do you think we will keeping saying this before someone listens?
FCF May 16, 2012 at 02:35 PM
We have space on Frontage rd where an unused gas station and office building are currently located. I think an IHop would be great there.
Lou May 16, 2012 at 03:10 PM
Maybe these polls are being used by the economic developement person. If not, they should be.
Michele Antisdel May 17, 2012 at 02:00 AM
Best burgers in town? Right here in my own backyard! My husband makes a mean, juicy burger out on our own grill :) Someone mentioned Five Guys. I think they would do an awesome business in East Haven.
Ann Della Camera May 17, 2012 at 03:41 AM
Lisa, I am hoping before my time on earth is up :) I keep trying.
Ann Della Camera May 17, 2012 at 03:41 AM
FCF, anothere good suggestion
Ginger DeMatteo May 17, 2012 at 10:37 PM
I would challenge any restaurant to make a better burger than my husband!! They are quite famous in our family, and none of us like burgers out anymore!! @Becki, thanks for the props for the concession at the Pit. I agree, the food has gotten better there. That is my position this year and I take pride in it!!
Flowers May 18, 2012 at 03:51 PM
This message stream seems to be going nowhere. We all confirm that McDonalds and Wendy's are good and the best unaffiliated burger in East Haven is at a seafood restaurant in Momauguin. As for me I prefer my own hand formed , high fat content beauties served on a crusty roll. Anyone for pink slime?
Robert C. Ruby June 12, 2012 at 02:00 PM
Besides burgers ,how about some fish places. Go to Supremes on rte 80 and get the best Scallops or Scrimp dinners
