What's the Deal with the Old A&P?

It’s been two years since the lights went out on the old A&P Super Foodmart after about one quarter of a century in business and many have talked about what it will become but nothing has been set in stone. The food store was closed when Big Y bought out the A&P chain across the area.

Last year, the New Haven Register reported that a technical school was eyeing the 45,000 square-foot former food store in the Foxhaven Plaza but those plans never came to fruition.

Then this past April, during his State of the Town Address, Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr., announced that a new ShopRite supermarket would be opening up in the former A&P Supermarket store front along Route 80 in Foxon. However, ShopRite spokesperson Santina Stankevich told East Haven Patch that nothing has been set in stone yet. "We have no confirmed plans at this time," Stankevich said during the spring.

As of last week, ShopRite is still in "negotiations" over taking the space owned by Pyramid Construction Group, a spokesperson for the group said.
