Hobby Lobby: New East Haven Store to Open In Early 2013

Renovation is now underway on the 43,800 square-foot building — formerly occupied by Home Goods — in the TJ Maxx shopping center along Frontage Road in East Haven.

The following is a press release submitted by Hobby Lobby Stores.

Hobby Lobby Stores, a privately held national retail chain of arts and crafts stores, hits another milestone with the signing of a lease to open a store in East Haven, making this location its first entry in the state of Connecticut.

Renovation is underway on this 43,800 square-foot building, formerly occupied by Home Goods, located at Frontage Road and I-95 Turnpike in the TJ Maxx shopping center.

Hobby Lobby is projected to open in the first quarter of 2013. The location will bring about 35 – 50 jobs to the community paying $13 per hour for full time, and $9 per hour for part-time associates.

“East Haven is centrally located, and easily accessible within an hour’s drive west to the Connecticut / New York border on the I-95 Turnpike, and just 40 miles north to Hartford on I-91. This makes it the perfect localityfor Hobby Lobby to open its first store in the state, and we are very excited to be part ofthis community as we continue to establish ourselves in the New England States,” stated John Schumacher, Assistant Vice President of Advertising.

He added, “Customers will find Hobby Lobby unlike any other in the crafts and home décor market. It’s a uniquely enriched shopping experience coupled with exceptional selection, value and service.”

Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., headquartered in Oklahoma City, OK, started as an outgrowth of Greco Products, a miniature picture frames company founded in a garage by David Green in 1970.

Today, Hobby Lobby has over 520 stores across the nation that average 55,000 square feet in size. This major Oklahoma City-based private corporation offers more than 65,000 crafting and home decor products in its stores.

Departments include floral, fabric, needle art, custom framing, baskets, home accents, wearable art, arts and crafts, and jewelry, scrapbooking and paper crafting supplies. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and all Hobby Lobby stores are closed on Sunday.

Lovely. A handful of mInimum wage no benefit jobs come to East Haven. Better than nothing, I suppose...

I love this store, I'm very excited to hear its coming to CT. I've always shopped there while on vacation and asked them multiple times if we'd ever get one!

You are correct there J.A.. Part time workers most likely at that. But pretty soon Obamacare will kick off with employers dropping any health coverage forcing those wanting coverage to join the federally mandated, state run, un-funded health care exchanges for any sort of minimal coverage. But like you said, better than nothing. To many it will be a job long waited for, some even their first job.

Jacob & Richard - you should learn to read the whole article before you comment! Hobby Lobby is paying $13 an hour to full-time and $9 hour to part time employees. Who gets a salary like that nowadays in retail???? Hardly "minimum wage" and "no benefits" jobs. and Hobby Lobby NOT dropping health care for employees!!!!

Happy New Year to you Mary. I just looked at the HH web site that shows wages on a general basis and someone with a standard bachelors degree, and depending on prior work in the field can make, now get this, from $7.83 up tp $13.86. Guess what, HH and the sister company (Mardel books), both owned by the same Christian family, just announced TODAY, they will not be paying for the mandated (free) birth control access as specficfied in Obamacare. And they are thinking about not providing medical as well, forcing employees to go into the state pools. Anyway, enjoy the new year and please stay well.

Richard, thanks for the warm New Year's greetings. Degree or not Hobby Lobby pays a minimum of $13 to full time associates (sales, cashiers, stock) and has been lauded by newspapers, Forbes and others for paying 80% above federal minimum wage. Also, Hobby Lobby released an announcemnt saying they will defy Obamacare and NOT pay for abortifacts and certain devices, and they have and will continue to pay for contraception. They have not and will not drop health care insurance, much to the mailignment and misinformation posted by those who disagree with Hobby Lobby standing up for they believe is right. Bottom line - they are good for the economy and for the community. And I do sincerely wish you a peaceful and prosperous New Year to you and yours.

And to you as well. I was just responding to what their web site had posted the other day. Yes, they will be a good addition to EH. Let's just wait to see what the wages will be when the time comes. I hope it is a high as you indicated. If its at the low end by the time taxes and the newly increased SS is taken out not much left.

I can't wait for this store to open!! I fully support Hobby Lobby's desicion not to provide the morning after pill. This is (as of now) a free country and if you don't like their employment policies then you can look elsewhere.

My hometown has a Hobby Lobby, in Waterloo, Iowa. It's a fantastic store, with a wide range of merchandise, and, I appreciate their values.. Pretty sure they are closed on Sundays! That too, is so refreshing, in this culture. For those applying to work there, a perk I would think, to know you can spend Sundays the way you choose!

I recently spoke with HL corporate, and they said that this location won't be open until the fall. I assume this is since they use their own construction company instead of hiring locally, but am not sure on the discrepancy is times stated.
