East Haven Farmers Market Opens Sunday

Local growers team up to offer some of the area's best fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs — and new this year: homemade breads.

The summer growing season is just about to hit its full stride, and the has arrived just in time.

The outdoor market opens this Sunday morning — and each consecutive Sunday through to Oct. 7 — in the parking lot of , from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This year's market is managed by family farmers Chris Viauso of and Carolyn Bradley of Borelli Farm in Northford.

Both local growers will be bringing in a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs throughout the next few months.

'A Lot of Things Coming'

Although it is still a bit early in the season, Viauso said this weekend he'll have a full range of lettuces and cabbage, arugula, radishes and even some broccolli rabe.

"We have a lot of things coming. At this time of year we don't have our full range of products. But we have a lot of things coming," he said, adding that this includes tomatoes, beets and carrots.

"And in the coming weeks we'll have the herbs," Viauso said.

Ramping Up

Bradley said her father's farm will be offering a fresh peaches, blueberries, string beans and squash.

"There's not as much ready now as there will be in the coming weeks — we're really beginning to ramp up," she said.

DiSorbo's Italian Bakery

In addition to the two local farms, will also be bringing their fresh, handmade breads to the East Haven market each and every Sunday this summer.

The Hamden family bakery will be offering stuffed breads, fried dough, as well as other items.

"And they'll be bringing their pastries, too," Viauso said.

Weather Or Not?

Although the late spring and early summer have been a hot one so far, Viauso said the rainfall has actually been just about where the local farm would like it to be.

"Some people would want a bit more rain, but we like it where it's been. That's just the way our land is," he said.

He added the fact that there have been no major storms or flloods to damage the crops has also been helpful to growers in the area this year, too.

"And really, the heat hasn't been that bad, either," he said.
