I wonder if quality stores opened up in town, if that would help solve the problem. Hmmmm? Shop Rite? Hobby Lobby? HELLO! If there were more and better businesses there would be more jobs.
I can agree Lise,...It might help solve the problem North Haven's Unemployment rate has dropped to 6.9% because they were able to make lemonade out of lemons. East Haven's problem is that we do not make the best out of that which we have for example have you seen the East Haven Mall? If we can host a Fall Festival and Latino Expo then why does the Town not hold a business expo at the High School to attract outside business to come into East Haven and let the Town's residents truly see the variety of products that one can find in East Haven? Why is there not a monthly segment produced for ETV showcasing the different businesses that we have in town?...It seem that local Politicans and those that would share their views on the news have no problem producing shows to air on ETV...Why not actually produce a monthly program as I stated aboved that would be beneficial to the residents and the communitty? I would think that surely the local Chamber of Commerce would be able to produce such a show featuring our local business and possibly a written piece to appear in the Courier??

You can not compare No.H to E.H. Two distinctly different communities geographically speaking. They had the land available for growth. E.H does not. EH has 3 areas available for any business of a size needed to hire groups of people. Opening small stores, shops, the so called mom & pop stores will not help. The 3 areas as you know are along RT-80, Main St. and the Industrial Park. Where else could a business open that needs a large space to build. RT-80 is built to the max know. Yes, there are a few vacant buildings but are they the type of structure a commercial or industrial could use? Even if there was one we have those residence living in the area in question that will try to stop it. "Not in my back yard" mentality. The I.P. is expanding to allow for growth, but this takes time. We don't need another coffee shop, bank, or pharmacy. Light industry/commercial retail employ the people that will help reduce the unemployment rates. So, I ask, where in EH can such be brought in?
Richard, Small Mom & Pop businesses are the back bone of the American Economy as you may be aware of many of those small business grow successfully into larger businesses. Have you ever heard of Wal-Mart or Ben and Jerry's, and there are many other examples as the following list will show: http://www.businessinsurance.org/10-mom-and-pop-businesses-that-turned-into-empires/
By the way Brandford is down to 6.8%
Richard Poulton October 22, 2012 at 02:11 PM
Yes Mr. Hoff mom & pop business are the back bone of the economy, but they don't hire in the numbers needed to help bring down the un-employment numbers. You mentioned 2 business. Other than Wal-Mart how many employeee's does the B&J store in Branford have? Not so much to help bring down the numbers. EH needs more light industrial and large commerical retail that hires large numbers of people. So, where do these places go to build? The vacant food store on RT-80 was to be rented to Porter & Chester for its new automotive school. That never happened, ask yourself why? With word of this happening people in the area already started screaming about traffic conditions. See, "not in my back yard". I am not knocking what you are saying Robert, just trying to be rational about where in EH can growth take place. New space is extremely limited. We need the tax base income these businesses bring in, not another deli or nail salon.

I think a business expo is a great idea. There is so many vacant storefronts I think there is room for all types of business. What EH is lacking is quality stores that the entire family can utilize.

It will never get better when the Economic Development Commission canceled there Meetting for the 3rd month in a row. Hobby Lobby, Shop Rite? Not a word being said
Richard Poulton October 22, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Come on now Sam. You know darn well if there is nothing on any agenda for any B or C, the meeting is cancelled. I know where you are going with this but maybe you should direct your comment to the chairperson of that commission.
Flowers October 23, 2012 at 12:31 AM
People are looking for jobs in industry , transportation or administration ..not retail. Most of these desired jobs are in other towns. Most of the East Haveners I know work out of town. If EH has a higher unemployment rate than surrounding towns , it might be because there are more unqualified applicants here.
Rosie October 23, 2012 at 01:08 AM
Agreed. A friend of mine lost his job in manufaturing and got a new, better job in 6 days. This was amid 14 different offers for employment. There are plenty of jobs out there, if you are skilled. Retail is fine for kids, but not so much to raise a family on. People need to expand your horizons.
Richard, You have often taken me to task over my leadership of the ADA Committee and number of meetings we have per year...Will you now also hold the Chairman of The Econimic Development Committee accountable? Part of being a Chairman is to create an agenda with items that benefit the residents of East Haven and address problems that exist at that specific time. Will you now be calling the EDC Chairman to task Richard or is it only fair to pick on a Chairman of a committee who under his chairmanship a committee that once was dormant has grown and thrived to the point where we are now active and providing residents with many items that they need to have a better quality of life?

Mr Hoff, last Friday 'bout 2:30 in da aftanoon, I was a walkin ole yeller, my black lab. I was on North High st and old yeller starts a growlin'. I's looks over to the right to see whats yeller growlin bout and low and behold, theres mayor joe sitting in an easy chair in his garage sippin on a cold one. I's thougt dat da peoples spected der mayor ta be at work durin da workin hours.
Sam Giglio October 23, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Richard my point is clear, If we need to get a Business to look at EH I would think Meetings are important of this Committee. This is not an easy Town to locate any Business so this Committee should be thinking out of the Box, not canceling Meetings. If you remember that was a large cry out from many in Town that nothing was being done to promote Business in EH from the last Mayor, Some where evening counting all the empty Strore Fronts. Can anyone tell me the count now?
Richard Poulton October 23, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Good morning Sam. Been awhile. My point was that there are many times during the year when a B/C has nothing to report as to the business of the B/C thus there is no meeting. I guess the answer to your question should come from the chairman of that commission as to why there are no meetings. No administration, and that includes the last one, can drag people into this town to "open shop". With the way the economy is right now its a wonder what we have is still open. This towns needs a larger commercial tax base. Needs businesses that will employ more than a mon & pop store would hire. Commercial space for such is extremely limited for "new" buldings. Thats one reason why the business park area is being expanded to allow for future growth. May take years. Yes it would be nice to have all vacent stores filled. Back to the B & C thing. Like I said, if there is no actions for an agenda no reason for a meeting. Like your School Building Comm. Town web site show no meetings for April, July, August & September. Thats an important commitee seeing whats going on in the system. Why no meetings. I would guess nothing on an agenda. Thats all I was trying to say. Stay dry today. Sam, by the way, we never got to meet at a meeting last year, if you get a chance stop by prior to a wetlands meetings and lets shake hands.
Richard Poulton October 23, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Just you Bob. LOL
Sam Giglio October 23, 2012 at 12:08 PM
You are right on many points but i think this Committee should try a little harder for all of us in Town. The School Building Committee with out any projects now whats to take other aproach to how we can save money in the system buy reveiwing all maintenance procedures and payouts so we can make sure we have everthing up to standards, But to date the BOE will not respond to our request. Lack of maintenance cost all of us money. The other issue we have on this Commlttee in having a Meeting, The last three new Members that the Mayor recommended and the TC approved have not attended a Meeting. Good thing we donot have a big project to work on. Yes one day we will meet.
Luigi Jones October 23, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Richy, I's wuz a worried and I tought yeller was a'growlin at a skunk, but it was just a mayor joe sittin there in his bermudi shorts.
Richard Poulton October 23, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Come on now Luigi Jonesmoor, come out from behind the fake hill-billy, un-educated, ignorance thing. We already have that person on the Patch. Try something new, this is old. I have an idea for you. Go to the Mayors office and ask to see his events calendar for that date & time and see what it says.
Richard Poulton October 23, 2012 at 12:28 PM
See Sam, this is what I like. We can agree to disagree as adults.
Richard,Thanks for an honest answer.
Lise Cavallaro October 23, 2012 at 12:40 PM
Then why aren't offices being asked to come here..sorry, I agree with Mr. Hoff. I think some type of a business expo with all the vacant store fronts and office space should be marketed.
Lise Cavallaro October 23, 2012 at 12:42 PM
I do agree that retail is not a high wage and tough to raise a family on. All that being said, I will continue to do my shopping in Branford, Milford, or North Haven. I still think there is so much wasted space in town, where we, as residents, could be spending our money.
CAjones October 23, 2012 at 12:44 PM
LOL.....Looks like the jokers that brought you ASsmith now bring you a new podunk . One more inbreed moron for the patch.
Rosie October 23, 2012 at 03:33 PM
Hi Lise..I also agree a business expo would be a good idea. We do have way to many empty storefronts, and it would be nice to have some quality stores to shop in without having to go to Branford or North Haven. And maybe offices as well. That wasn't my point. This was about unemployment and the point I was making is that there are jobs available. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
Luigi Jones October 23, 2012 at 03:43 PM
Was a matter Mr. toady? People be catching on to you, boy? I's hear Y'all dont always drink da beer; so's maybe theys shoudnt value you opinion of it too highly; nor of anything else yous gots to say, Dummy.
