East Haven Unemployment Rate Dips to 9.3 Percent

The town's unemployment drops back down to under 10 percent, but still remains above both the state and national averages.

East Haven's unemployment rate dropped for the second month in a row, moving back down to under 10 percent for the first time in two months.

According to the latest figures released by the Connecticut Department of Labor, East Haven's unemployment for September was 9.3 percent.

In August, the town's unemployment rate sat at 10.

Additionally, the department's figures also showed the labor force in East Haven dropped slightly over the same period: from 16,614 in August to 16,539 in Sepamber.

In Connecticut, the pool of jobless people last month also dropped to 8.2 percent overall. Nationally, the United State's unemployment rate is 7.6 percent.

Locally, Branford's unemployment rate currently sits at 7.3 percent, North Branford at 6.8 percent and North Haven's is at 6.9 percent. The New Haven County unemployment average for September was 8.6.

East Haven Numbers

East Haven's unemployment rate reached its three-year low in April, rose to 8.7 percent in May, was 8.4 percent in March, 8.6 percent in February and 8.7 percent in January. And the town's rate was 8.4 percent in December.

In 2011 East Haven’s annual average unemployment rate was 9.7 percent. In 2010 it was 10.2 percent.

The town's highest reported unemployment rate over the last two years was in January 2011, when 10.7 percent of East Haven was out of work.
