It was a beautiful late summer afternoon for East Haven Public School District's back-to-school family picnic on Saturday.
Some 3,000 members of the school community attended the event, which was held on the grounds of East Haven High School.
The picnic was the first of its kind for the district.
The event was entirely funded by donations from local businesses and organizations, whether a financial contribution to the organizing committee or passing along items or services at no cost.
In addition to a giant inflatable slide, bounce house, games, live music and food, the afternoon also featured a petting zoo and several booths manned by school, town and community organizations.
Several East Haven High School students also served as volunteers manning the manning the games and rides, as well as running the food service and helping to set up and break down for the day.
Tuttle School Principal Laura Lynn, who spearheaded the effort for the community picnic, said any monies left over following Saturday's gathering would be donated to and shared equally among each of the schools' PTA/PTO committees.
