Memorial Day Schedule: Town To Honor Those Who Gave Their Lives

This year's Honored Veteran is Ralph "Butch" Mannochi.

A message from the East Haven Mayor's office:

Once again this year on Memorial Day, May 27th, the East Haven Veteran’s Council in conjunction with Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr. will honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As Memorial Day remains a day when we remember and honor those veterans who lost their lives fighting for our great nation, The Town of East Haven will continue the tradition of honoring the war dead with ceremonies of a reflective tone.

The ceremonies and remembrances will feature a procession from the American Legion Post 89 on Thompson Avenue to the East Haven Green. The procession is scheduled to step off at 11:30am, Monday May 27th, Memorial Day.

Club Corvette of CT will be providing vehicles for veterans who choose to ride, through their “Vets in Vettes” program.

The award-winning East Haven High School Band will provide a program of patriotic music beginning at 11:30am at the gazebo on the Green.

Beginning at noon, there will be remarks from Mayor Maturo and other dignitaries and the Town will honor Ralph “Butch” Mannochi, East Haven’s 2013 Honored Veteran.

Mannochi was drafted into the Army in 1967 and deployed to Vietnam later that year. During that time he was involved in numerous skirmishes and in the Tet Offensive, during which he sustained an eye injury. He was awarded many medals during his service until his discharge at the end of 1968. Mannochi is a charter member of Vietnam Veterans Association, Chapter 484 and one of the original organizers of the VVA Independence Day East Haven Fireworks celebration, a committee he still sits on today.

Following remarks, the Veterans, Color Guard and guests will proceed to the War Monuments and “Honors” will be rendered.

All are invited back to Post 89 for refreshments following the ceremonies.
