Magazine Ranks Audubon Center Best Birding Spot in State

The Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center in Milford flies to the top of Yankee Magazine's 2011 Editors' Choice for best birding location.

Thanks to the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center, Milford can stake its claim to being home to the best birding location in the state - that is, according to Yankee Magazine's 2011 Editors' Choice for adventure destinations in the Nutmeg State.

During a visit to the center on Thursday afternoon it was as if the birds had gotten wind of their home's status and were singing their praises. Visitors to the coastal center, located at the end of Milford Point Road, are immediately greeted by chirps and tweets from the hundreds of species that are found there. According to the coastal center, 300 of the 399 species known in the state have been seen there, including piping plovers, least terns, American osytercrackers and both types of night herons.

The coastal center's website states that it opened in 1995 and is located on an 8.4-acre wildlife refuge and bird sanctuary adjacent to the 840-acre Wheeler Salt Marsh. In addition to the birding opportunities, it serves as an educational facility for local schools. In fact, a class was visiting the center on Thursday.
