The East Haven mayor says he hopes the demolition will help the families and community "close a painful chapter of their lives and begin to move forward and heal from this terrible tragedy."

Crews from Bridgeport-based Connecticut Tank Removal demolished the house at 64 Charter Oak Ave. this morning.

The East Haven home was one of two hit by a plane when it crashed on Aug. 9. The accident claimed the life of the pilot and his son, as well as two young children in one of the homes.

According to a press release from the Town of East Haven, representatives of the National Traffic Safety Board are expected to perform one last review of sediment at the site for the purposes of completing their investigation. Finally, the remainder of any soil and debris will be removed.

The entire process is expected to be completed in less than 48 hours (demo began at about 8 a.m. on Aug. 28).

In the release, East Haven Mayor Joe Maturo said, “The Town will continue to do anything and everything that it can to help this neighborhood heal and to help the families affected by this tragedy to move forward. I know that it has not been an easy three weeks. However, with the demolition of this second home, the affected families will be able to close a painful chapter of their lives and begin to move forward and heal from this terrible tragedy.”
