St. Vincent's Softball, Baseball Take Home Championship Titles

Softball and Baseball Teams took home two titles on Thursday evening as both teams soundly defeated St. Rita’s Teams.

The Lady Eagles fell behind 1-0 in the first inning after St. Rita’s had two consecutive hits. But that was all the offense they could muster against a brilliant performance by Kaitlyn Mingione, who pitched a complete game in the 12 to 1 victory giving St. Vincent DePaul its 2nd consecutive Greater New Haven Parochial Athletic League Championship (GHPAL) — and in this campaign the girls were undefeated.

The game was close until St. Vincent blew it open on an bases loaded double by 6th grader Mia Cifarelli.

“It was a key hit because at that point we were up 5-1 and with St. Rita’s offense you never know what can happen. They actually scored against Kaityln and the top of the order seemed to figure her out a bit," said Dan McCann Head Coach.

Defensively, St. Vinny’s looked sharp as both Erin McCann and Briana Carrano made good plays to Laura Anderson at first along with solid play behind the back stop with Jordan Parlato.

“We were not just pitching strong, we are solid defensively and we have great chemistry. An example of it is Jordan Parlato, she  wasn’t feeling well but she is such a gamer she went to school just so she could play in today’s game. She  stayed behind the plate the whole game and didn’t want to come out, that’s what we’re all about, playing as a team," said McCann.

Fittingly, the last pitch was made by Mingione and the final out was made by shortstop McCann to end a great run by the 8th grade SVDP Girls.

Both McCann and Mingione along with Anderson, all three captains, earned 2012 Most Valuable Player Awards for their outstanding pitching performance this year.

Over on Field 4, St. Vincent’s Boys were playing St. Rita’s boys for their Championship and it wasn’t even close.

Behind Michael Mancuso’s complete game and Dontae Abbate going 5 for 7 with 7 RBI’s the St Vincent boys put away St. Rita’s in the 5th inning with an 11 run explosion. The final score was 14-2.

This is the first time in over 30 years that both the Girls and Boys have had captured the title in the same year. For such a small school St. Vincent produces many good athletes.

The Eagles will be graduating Erin McCann (Lauralton Hall), Kaityln Mingione (Lauralton Hall) Laura Anderson (East Haven High School), Dontae Abbate (Notre Dame), Scott Krebs (East Haven High School), Fred Montz (Notre Dame) and Jamie Ferrucci (Notre Dame)
