Sugar Looks to 'Sweeten' East Haven's 'Sour' Times

The acclaimed East Haven bakery, with the help of an anonymous donor, will be donating 500 of its award-winning cupcakes to a local children's charity In hopes of starting "the community's healing process."

Brenda DePonte of spoke to East Haven Patch this afternoon about why her family's bakery has decided to partner with an anonymous donor to make a donation of the shop's award-winning cupcakes to a greater New Haven area children's charity.

"Although this is a very serious situation going on now, we don't anyone to forget that there is great people here," DePonte said.

Peace, love — and cupakes?

The town of and its residents have been under an intense, often highly critical, national media microscope since four East Haven Police officers for federal civil rights violations.

And that criticism has only intensified in the wake of national media firestorm that followed Mayor Joseph Maturo's comment to a television reporter that he as a way to help support the town's Latino community following the officers' arrest.

But , the and award-winning Main Street bakery, say they want to seize this opportunity to take "something 'sour' and turn it 'sweet.'"

"We are very excited to spread the news that an anonymous donor has teamed up with Sugar Bakery to donate 500 cupcakes that will help start the East Haven community's healing process," the bakery announced last night via its Facebook page. "These 500 cupcakes will go to a worthwhile children's charitable organization in the Greater New Haven area because, after all, change starts with our children."

The bakery — along with her mother Carol Vollono, and grandmother Betty Bertierand — its donor, however, are asking for the public's help in deciding which children's chairty will be the lucky recipient of the trays and trays of Sugar's mini-confectionary masterpieces the cupcakes.

The bakers are asking residents to make their suggestions through its Facebook page.

The suggestions will be gathered, and the winner will then be hand-selected by the donor next Friday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.

East Haven Patch will be stopping into the bakery later today in hopes of speaking with DePonte about the cupcake contest and donation effort. In the meantime — don't forget to post your suggestion!
