Open Topic Thread

Looking to comment on or discuss an East Haven-related issue that's not specifically addressed in a recent article? Then this is the place to post!

There is always lots going in East Haven.

And town residents on all sides of the issues aren't shy about letting their opinions be known, whether in discussions with family, friends and neighbors — or right here on East Haven Patch.

But with readers required to keep their comments focused on the issues raised in each of the individual articles at hand, what happens when you'd like to discuss a town issue but there just doesn't seems be a recent related article to share your comment?

Enter: "Open Topic Thread."

Rules of Engagement

This article will serve as an open discussion platform. There will be no requirement to "stay on topic" for commenting — because there is no one topic!

However, there still are certain rules that must be adhered to for open thread commenting, or readers will have their posts removed:

  • All posts MUST be East Haven-related. There will be no exceptions. If a reasonable case can't be made for the connection, it will be deleted.
  • All comments MUST adhere to our Terms of Use.
  • Name-calling and personal attacks will absolutely not be tolerated. While the topics may be a free for all, maintaining respect for other readers and commentators is not. And those who repeatedly violate this — or any other of our terms of use — will have their account suspended.

Fair Middle Ground

The open thread will also remain "pinned" to our homepage, right up here on the top four, to allow easy access for readers who want to check in — and chime in — on the latest comment threads of discussion.

Ultimately, this open platform is a direct response to East Haven Patch's active commenting climate. Readers have a lot to say, and they have made their voices heard, that they want to be able to say it!

And so, hopefully, this open thread will provide a fair middle ground to allow free-flowing discussion while also keeping other article threads focused on the specific issues they address.

For any additional questions, suggestions or concerns, email julie.weisberg@patch.com.

Why don't you lock a topic from further comment after a week. This way we don't have people dredging up old news.

Trinity: After reviewing the video footage again, the opening intro of images on the video that accompanies the article — which many would consider offensive — have nothing to do with East Haven or the EHPD. And while the News 8 story does specifically address the indictment, you must first view several opening images that many would find upsetting, and which do not relate to East Haven. Therefore, the link to the article and video have been removed. Instead, I suggest you simply find the News 8 video and post a link to that on this thread, with your comments, and start your discussion flowing that way. Just an idea.

Luigi: Trinity's posted an article on that site that specifically addresses East Haven Police. I understand your argument, I do — and I know some people are going to be upset when there posts get removed on this page because they feel there will be a general connection to an East Haven issue — but to post on the open thread, there does have to be a specific East Haven connection. That is one of the rules.

Well Julie,
I strongly disagree with your logic as it pertains to that post by Trinity. She could have pulled that video from the channel 8 site WITHOUT the offensive depictions of police violence that did NOT take place in East Haven. But when I show footage of what COULD happen to a police officer who doesn't follow the appropriate procedures, you pull it as not pertaining to East Haven.

I don't see the difference, therefore I call foul.

No matter, I know, you're the boss!

Julie, although this is an open topic site, I find the video posted by Trinity, a.k.a California, to be highly offensive. He/she is trying to infer that EH police are abusing those they have arrested. They have never been accused of this, it is not on the indictment, it has not been proven, and this video should be removed immediately. It has NO bearing on East Haven whatsoever.

FYI for those driving about EH or in any town or highway. Some very good suggestions by the way. Want to avoid being stopped, do or don't do the following: Have a valid drivers licence, registration and insurance. Avoid runing stop signs/overhead lights. Don't have loud/ illegal mufflers or illegal tinted windows. Don't load car with to many passengers. Make sure all lights are in working order. At night if stopped, turn on interior lights, this way the officer has a less threatening concern of occupants. Don't tell him to go catch real criminals and leave drivers alone. In other words don't have an attitude. Obey the rules of the road and you will not draw attention too yourself.

By the way, at night the officer has no idea of the race of operator or occupants until he walks up to your car.

I'm sure the photos of Diallo after the NYPD sodomized with a broomstick were gruesome. Moreover, I'm sure the officers who perpetrated the abuse were mortified when their heroic facade fell apart. Perhaps they should not have sodomized the man...

Police present a gentlemanly facade to middle class suburbia. This mask falls to the ground when dealing with activists and minorities. It is time to face reality.

In the Patch article involving the RT-80 housing, one commentor mentioned the 3 Stone Pillars project and concerns were again raised. Because 3 SP commenting didn't fit the story line, I am responding to it here. Little history: 3SP was originally submitted as 13 single family units. On the site was a small wetland area. The wetlands commission had the developer reduce the size to 9 homes, & install a better storm water run off retention/detention area. What was approved fit the criteria of the wetland rules as found in local regulation & state statute. Since there was no significant activity as defined, no public hearing was required. Approval was placed in legal notices as required. Having no response in required time limit by public calling for a public hearing, plan went into effect. Last spring/summer another proposal was presented changing to a larger build, which was later withdrawn. During that process it was reported that other wetland soils were found, but off site. I also understand that there was no evidence produced that the first approved plan would have an effect on any off site property. Just a reminder, the wetlands commission only holds public hearings based on three things: 1, a significant activity will occure; 2, commission feels that there will be a public interest in commenting; 3, 25 signatures are submitted calling for a public hearing after printing of legal notice.

Follow-up on 3SP. Hopefully at the next wetlands meeting a decision will be made as to the true expiration of the original permit. It is contented that then town engineer James Staunton had no authority to issue any administrative approval extending any permit. State statute only allows for someone who has completed the required DEEP courses to give what is called an administrative approval. Staunton had no such training. Then town attorney Cirillo said being a P.E. allows such. The commission at that time refused to except evidence presented contridicting that opinion. It is hoped that a proper legal opinion can be given, making all decisions made by Staunton invalid. Thus, the 3SP wetland permit actually expired in July 2009. We shall see. There were numerous violations of statutes by Staunton.

Poulton, so this is why you supported Maturo for Mayor, so you could get back on the Inland Wetland Commission to resume the battle you started, that a 3 day course gave you more power than a four year course that a P.E. has after collage. Give it a break; the engineer has the juice not you. And P.E. White will fight you on this too.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

February 24, 1895 - José Martí, a Cuban revolutionary, poet, journalist and teacher, began the liberation struggle against Spanish control. He had been forced out of Cuba repeatedly (to Spain) for his opposition to colonial rule, and spent 15 years in the U.S. organizing the revolution just before returning home.

February 24, 1966 - Barry Bondhus, classified 1-A (fully eligible) for the draft during the Vietnam War, dumped two buckets of manure in file drawers at the Elk River, Minnesota, draft board. A farmer’s son (one of ten brothers) from Big Lake who acted with the full support of his parents, he was charged with destruction of government property.

His father, Tom, wrote a declaration of war on the government over their insistence on forcing his boys into the army. He said he was prepared to die to protect his sons but eager to negotiate.“My opinion is that since our constitution guarantees: Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness; and because the army denies all three; the draft is not lawful.”

Barry, sometimes referred to as “the Big Lake One,” who listed his race as “human” on the draft forms, served 14 months in jail and prison for his action.

Missing to many days lately.
On this day in 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William Travis issues a call for help on behalf of the Texan troops defending the Alamo, an old Spanish mission and fortress under attack by the Mexican army. He soon became a leader of the growing movement to overthrow the Mexican government and establish an independent Texan republic. When the Texas revolution began in 1835, Travis became a lieutenant-colonel in the revolutionary army and was given command of troops in the recently captured city of San Antonio de Bexar (now San Antonio). On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican force commanded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana arrived suddenly in San Antonio. Travis and his troops took shelter in the Alamo, where they were soon joined by a volunteer force led by Colonel James Bowie.Though Santa Ana's 5,000 troops heavily outnumbered the several hundred Texans On February 24, they answered Santa Ana's call for surrender with a bold shot from the Alamo's cannon. Furious, the Mexican general ordered his forces to launch a siege. The Texan troops managed to inflict huge losses on their enemy, killing at least 600 of Santa Ana's men.The brave defense of the Alamo became a powerful symbol for the Texas revolution, helping the rebels turn the tide in their favor. At the crucial Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 910 Texa Sam Houston defeated Santa Ana's army of 1,250 men, spurred on by cries of "Remember the Alamo"
