Fund Created to Assist East Haven Police Officers

An online fundraiser has been started to help offset the legal fees and family expenses of the four East Haven Police officers arrested last week for alleged federal civil rights violations.

An online fundraiser has been created to help provide financial support for the "legal fees and family expenses" of the four East Haven Police officers indicted last week by a federal grand jury for alleged civil rights violations.

The "EHPD Signal 4 Fund" states its fundraising goal is $2,000. It has so far raised $600.

As part of its literature the page states:

The Federal Government has unlimited resources, via our tax dollars, to pursue criminal charges against four East Haven Police officers, however their families do not. They are now burdened with the cost of attorneys, court fees, and lost wages, while still trying to support their families.

The four East Haven officers, Sgt. John Miller, Officer Dennis Spaulding, Officer David Cari and Officer Jason Zullo, have served their community and have risked their lives to protect the citizens of East Haven. Now is your chance to give back to these officers.

In addition, an individual fundraising site has been set up for Officer Zullo. The fund page states it is hoping to raise $50,000. It has so far raised $1,435.

According to a report in The Hartford Courant, the four officers are free on bonds ranging from $100,000 to $300,000. And a Januarly 2013 trial date has been set.

OMG!! Get a public attorney if you can't afford the fees!! Why should people donate to this! If they are proven innocent THEN a fund should be set up!! This is a joke. Our whole town is now a joke! I've living in East Haven all my life and for the first time I'm ashamed to be part of this town!!

if only they were in this country illegaly, then the mush heads from yale law school would represent them for free and people would come out of the woodwork to defend them. gotta love this justice system, beat a learning disabled person to death, get out in 8 years, mention a taco and they want to hang you on the green.

The beneficiaries of this and other fundraising should remember to report this money on their tax returns next year. The Fed's will be watching.

Why anybody in their right mind would offer any type of assistance or support to these so called "Officers" is beyond me; but then again, Hitler and Mussolini had their supporters until the very end. Even the murderous two bit thief and prison punk John Gotti is still regarded by many in East Haven's Italian community as a type of "folk hero". Very strange.

Isn't that reference to John Gotti a tad "RACIST"
given that most residents of this town are Italian?

Luigi,

Most residents in East Haven aren't stupid enough to worship John Gotti. There are a few however who do. I've personally seen posters of Gotti in garages around town, alongside the Yankee memorabilia. This is no different than Latinos worshiping Tony Montana. A criminal punk is not somebody who should be looked up to.

What ever happened to they are INNOCENT until proven guilty!! For all the times that they unselfishly defended us it's it time we help them while preserving the fundamental of our legal system that everyone deserves a defence. Let's all remember that these men have served the town faithfully, and even risked their lives in doing so! No one ever recognized them when they were protecting the town, but now, they want to put them on the chopping block the first chance they get. If we assume the worst about the men that carry the badge who then would we get to want to protect our town.

Really? These officers are on pd administrative leave. They still get a paycheck..and they will until the trial starts! How many of you would fund a john doe's criminal defense when they are accused of similar acts? You mean to tell me that if your neighbor was arrested for assualt you would fund their defense. And if they are sooo innocent, in the end the taxpayers of EH will have to pay their defense bills back...so then these officers have not only collected monies from hard working citizens but they will have their bills repaid by the town....Who makes out then?

Donna you asked "did I wake up in dictatorship today." of course you did and you have been waking to a dictatorship since Obuma became President. He has an atty General and all the minions in the Justice dept lying and working to make the government Obuma wants. This nonsense in your town is just the tip of the iceberg. They want to change the landscape to get all the votes they need for another term and if stupid Dems keep him in again they deserve all they get in the future. These commenters who call the police names and keep bashing others are really enjoying what is happening. It just proves what vindictive people will do and continue to do.

Their being on justified and warranted (innoncent until proven guilty) paid leave merely allows them to continue paying the bills for their home (to which some are not even allowed to go back to in this interim year!), support their families and survive the day to day costs of life. After using their pay for cost of living how are they supposed to come up for money for a qualified and competent defense lawyer (up to $600/hr.)? IF they had any savings, my guess is that it was exhausted by having to post a bond anywhere from $100,000-$300,000. As Mike said, if you don't agree or like it, then don't donate! The pervasive culture around this case of judgment and un-informed and unsubstantiated accusations (by commentors and citizens) is scary - but not surprising, as the case is rooted in that in the first place from above. Shame on our society for being so quick to judge and criticize, point fingers but not extend a hand.

Gee Don, watch Fox News much? The Justice Dept refused to bring any cases against minorities? Really? You expect them to charge a couple of drunk, street guys with being the New Black Panther movement just because some of the R-wing-nuts wanted to taint an election? Do you really want to be counted in the vast majority of Fox News watchers who are go grossly misinformed (as shown in many poles the past few years). C'mon, you HAVE to be smarter than that. Its pretty much common knowledge in the New Haven & Shoreline area that East Haven has long been a racist town and it has been glaringly reflected in its PD and made headlines all over the country. If the "Old School" racist residents who support them, and there are many of them, want to donate money, so be it. But these cops really don't deserve private or tax payer money for their defense.

He had the info and the truth that minorities including the black Panthers should not be bothered.

I can't believe you would fall for anything brought to light by Andrew Breitbart, a known disgraced, right wing, wanna-be journalist who only shows up on Fox. From what I've read, the entire New Black Panther Party consists of the two guys on video and the man holding the camera. This whole thing was basically a YouTube stunt. A real example of voter intimidation were the armed Minutemen who were at polling places in Tucson, Ariz., in 2006 intimidating Hispanics. Furthermore, The Justice Department has brought 3 or 4 cases under Section 11b of the Voting Rights Act since 1965. These are dismally low numbers. Two of those four cases (brought under Bush) were brought against blacks and on behalf of whites. Those statistics show that these cases are rare and difficult to bring. Those statistics also show that the Bush administration only used 11b on behalf of whites while ignoring dozens of complaints of intimidation against minority voters. Given those facts, it would seem that DOJ needs to strengthen enforcement on behalf of minorities in this area. No, Don, I'm not told what to believe. I READ and so should you. Who is the Ed Show.

Here are some key excerpts from the above article. And you're going to tell me the DOJ is on the up and up? Try again.
"Thomas Perez, chief of the DOJ civil rights division, was in the forefront. A controversial Obama administration appointee, Perez was a subject of a recent book by a former DOJ official who describes “how a once-storied DOJ Civil Rights Division” has, under Perez, “degenerated into a politicized fiefdom for far-left militants, where the enforcement of the law depends on the race of the victim.”
Among the improper commentary by the DOJ: statements denouncing the accused officers as a “cancerous cadre” and “bullies with badges.”
Consider whether you would ever hear such rhetoric by federal officials at a press conference to announce the arrests on criminal charges and the holding for deportation of 12 Ecuadorians or Mexicans illegally in the U.S. Imagine one of them taking to a public podium to denounce those arrested as a “cancerous cadre” and “low-lives with stolen Social Security numbers.” I could just see the headlined condemnations in the press, and the hysterical screams in the hallways of Yale Law School.
EHPD’s failure to “reach out” to the Latino community (whatever the heck that means), as if there is a federal statute requiring that. I prefer cops reach out and nab drunk drivers and those speeding around town unlicensed and uninsured, without fear of the DOJ’s demography despots swooping down with subpoenas.

The East Haven p.d. along with the Guilford p.d. {and others, I'm sure...} have made life hell for a lot of good people. I am an activist with over twenty years of experience. Activists are trained to be on guard with the FBI. This is because of the cointelpro program that flourished during the 1960's and 1970's. That said, I am in complete support of the feds when they engage in apprehending abusive, rapist pigs.

Thomas Jefferson said, 'When the people fear the government, we have tyranny. When the government fear the people, we have liberty.'

Perhaps a shift from a police state rife with privacy invasion, terror, and torture scares some of you...

Oh PLEASE, you sanctimonious pinhead. This wasn't Abu Ghraib. EVEN if there were ANY violations, they have yet to be proved.

Please be careful as you step off your high horse onto your soapbox!

God bless Father Manship and his video camera. Even now, with video evidence of a feloneous crime, there are doubters. Luigi, why is it you resort to name calling when you disagree with someone's opinion? Were you picked on as a child?

First of all....you are the one CONSTANTLY name calling.....with your derogatory comments towards the Mayor. Secondly, I was seldom "picked on" as a child, more often than not I would protect those who were. I'm sure a little runt like yourself has had problems in the past however, right Robert? (or is it Danny?).
As to this video made by the good parson from Fair Haven, I haven't seen very much torture or physical abuse alleged by you or "red".

Thank God, the FBI raided the abusers before they could escalate to Abu Ghraib porportions. Luigi, you need to be careful.

How much abuse of power is acceptable?

Is karate chopping a womans vagina while she is peacefully restrained in handcuffs
acceptable? How about bashing a non-resistant mans head against a wall? Is it okay for the local p.d. to sodomize a black man with a broom-stick? When is gratuitous, retaliatory violence carried out by angry bullies with badges acceptable?

I say never.

I say there are only "allegations" of minor "gratuitous violence".

I say non of the scenarios you describe EVER happened here, nor were alleged to have.

I say you can that you are exaggerating what is only alleged and should also be mindful of this fact.

I take offense to "Red's" comments. He/she/it is spewing accuations that are not anywhere near the truth, nor have there been any complaints to these accusations. I also read a threat into this towards Luigi. Julie, please do something about this. I would call this false accusations. We all are entitled to opionions, but this one crosses the line big time.

Luigi the feds have it all on film. But for the record, just how much gatuitous, retaliatory violence would you be willing to accept? Assuming of course that the victim was your wife, daughter, boyfriend or son.

There is NOTHING I've seen on video that reflects anything like you allege.

When I see such a video I will comment.

The feds have what on film, all that filth you allege? I highly doubt it, and you are a liar, plain and simple. Your words have NO merit. There are NO allegations or charges against any officers anything like you have written. You are a disgusting bottom feeder. I hope this comes back to you double...karma...got to love it.

Will someone please remind Maturo to remove the corn husk wrapper from his tamale the next time he has a Mexican dinner? The man is hopelessly out of touch.

Everyone: Last reminder to get back on the topic of the article at hand. And to refrain from the personal attacks, name-calling and bickering back and forth at each. You've highjacked the thread, and this deters other readers from commenting -- not the best way to encourage additional voices and opinions to join the discussion. Next step, I'm just going to close the article down to any more comments.

The video proves those officers falsely arrested a priest and lied about it. How do you defend that ? The Grand Jury report indicates the arrest report for Mayor Capone was altered 24 times after the fact...can you say " political vendetta " ? These 4 officers are just the tip of the iceberg. I'm interested in what happens when ' co conspiritor # 1 " is also arrested....
