Update at 5:15 p.m.
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has added her name to the growing roster of political figures who are appalled by East Haven Mayor Joe Maturo's taco comment.
In a statement released today, the Democrat representing Connecticut's Third Congressional District, said, “I am appalled by the comments made by East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo yesterday. His comments have no place in a civil society and they do not reflect the values of the good residents of East Haven. Mayor Maturo has insulted the Latino community in Connecticut. I am very disappointed by Mayor Maturo’s comments and am glad that he has apologized for these insensitive remarks.”
Update at 2 p.m.
East Haven Democratic Town Committee Chairman Gene Ruocco has called for Mayor Joseph Maturo's resignation in response to the mayor's remarks yesterday to WPIX reporter Mario Diaz.
“Maturo’s comment (I might have tacos when I go home) goes to the root of the racial profiling allegations here in East Haven... Everyone knows the seriousness of this matter and for him, as the leader of our community, to say something so utterly insensitive is a complete disgrace. He should be ashamed of himself.”
Update at 12:30 p.m.
House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) today released the following statement on East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo:
“Mayor Maturo’s comments are completely abhorrent and have no place in our civil discourse. More than just apologizing, Mayor Maturo needs to start working to bring his town together to overcome this terrible incident.”
Update at 11:30 a.m.
East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo apologized for what he characterized as an "insensitive and off-collar comment." Part of the statement issued to the press is excerpted below.
"Our community needs to refocus on healing together. To date, my administration has already taken steps to begin that healing process. Most recently, I commissioned a new advisory committee to the Mayor named “LEARN” (Law Enforcement Advisory Resource Network) aimed at recommending updates to policies and procedures to the Board of Police Commissioners. Recognizing the need for the Latino community to have a voice on this exciting and important new board, I appointed Jose Velasquez, a well-respected community volunteer and native of Puerto Rico, to the board. The first products of that committee have been a new mission statement for our Police Department, a more accessible civilian complaint procedure, and the publishing of updated civilian complaint forms in both English and Spanish."
Updated at 9:35 a.m.
East Haven Mayor Maturo reportedly drove away and said "no comment" to FoxCT reporter Anthony DiLorenzo when asked to respond to Gov. Malloy's statement.
DiLorenzo reported via his Twitter account:
@anthonyonfox: Mayor Maturo speeds away and says no comment when asked to react to @GovMalloyOffice calling his "taco" comments "repugnant." #easthaven
East Haven Patch will continue to provide updates to this story on the site, as well as on our Twitter and Facebook pages.
Updated at 9 a.m.
Gov. Dannel Malloy has just released a public statement regarding East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo's comments, calling them "repugnant" and "unacceptable."
Malloy then continued, with a statement demanding the mayor apologize today:
“The comments by East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo are repugnant. They represent either a horrible lack of judgment or worse, an underlying insensitivity to our Latino community that is unacceptable. Being tired is no excuse. He owes an apology to the community, and more importantly, he needs to show what he’s going to do to repair the damage he’s done. And he needs to do it today.”
Original Story (Tuesday at 11:30 p.m.)
East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo is facing criticism for what many are calling racially insensitive remarks during an interview Tuesday following the indictment and arrest of four East Haven Police officers for allegedly violating the civil rights of Latino residents and others.
During a television interview taping, New York City-based WPIX reporter Mario Diaz asked Maturo: "What are you going to do for the Latino community today?" And Maturo responded: "I might have tacos when I go home, I'm not quite sure yet."
Diaz and Maturo continue their discussion for another four minutes.
The WPIX reporter said in his report that later, Maturo came to him and apologized for the remarks. But Diaz called the exchange "indefensible."
"There's no excuse for that," the reporter said during his report.
East Haven Patch reader Dave Hausler agreed. On our Facebook page Hausler said of Maturo's comments: "When our police officers face federal charges for racial discrimination, our mayor should know better than to make such a "flippant" comment to the press, regardless of how many interviews he has given on the subject today. East Haven deserves a leader with the integrity to provide a strong example to our troubled police department, not the wrong example."
And East Haven Vine blogger Dan McCann, in his latest post made late tonight, is calling for Maturo to resign following the comments he made during the interview.
"I believe in our men and women in blue and will stand with them shoulder to shoulder in this fight with the United States Government but what I will not stand for as a taxpayer in the Town of East Haven is for our leader, our Mayor, to pour more salt on the wound," McCann commented in his post.

I used to think Connecticut was full of corrupt nut-case liberals (afterall, you guys gave us Chris Dodd). Now I realize there are red-blooded Americans in at least one town. The mayor has actually improved Connecticut's image for the rest of the Nation. The reporter obviously has an axe to grind (ok, he is really waiting for the government to give free axes to repressed minorities who have been denied their inate right to own an axe, then he will advocate for a government program to grind the axes for people who are too lazy to grind it themselves).

The Mayor should not even have wasted his time with this spindoctor reporter,After answering this guys question several times he still repeatedly tried to trip him up and misquote him.
Dan
8:03 am on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
You are joking right? Tripped him up? He was simply asked what he was going to do for Latinos and he gave a flippant, insensitive answer that revealed his true nature. The mayor should follow the motto; Its better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt! He explained himself later by saying that the question and answer were not "in depth". In other words it was shallow, just like him. The people of East Haven should admit that they made a huge mistake in putting him back in office and demand his resignation. He has been back for only a few months and he has severely damaged our already bad reputation.
Rob
6:45 pm on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Mr. Dan . . . do explain why the mayor (of any town) is somehow beholden to do something special for "Latinos." The question asked by the reporter was, in and of itself, racist . . . suggesting that Latinos need some sort of special treatment or they will be unable to succeed in life is the most racist thing one could possibly say. Why didn't the reporter ask what the mayor planned to do for black folks (maybe buy some barbecue on the way home) or the Irish folks (maybe buy some beer and potatoes on the way home)? If Latinos are truly "equal' to people of African, Irish, Polish, Asian, or Polynesian descent, then why would Latinos need special help with anything? The mayor's job is to take care managing the government of the City, not cowtow to every ethnic group that might possibly have a chip on its shoulder. I will suggest that the Mayor's goal should be to promote programs and projects that will benefit all citizens of the city, and not focus on the special interest groups that have refined the skill of whining.
Donna Maltese

Not to take away from the original story. I also believe in innocent until proven guilty... This is why the reporter used the word eleged. Rob
6:49 pm on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
You apparently don't understand the rules. If the alleged victim is anything but a white heterosexual male, the police are guilty until proven innocent. Even if proven innocent, the officers are still guilty of "policing while white," and will still be presumed to be guilty just because they got accused of something.

Dave Hausler
7:10 am on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Pamela, you are correct. The police charged are innocent until proven guilty. All I ask is that our mayor displays the integrity his position requires. He wasn't supporting the police by his remarks. Instead he added weight to the accusation that our town officials are prejudiced. He lost a huge opportunity to separate himself as a leader from the actions of the police. Now, if they are found guilty in time, can we trust this man to correct the problem, based on his remarks? This shows a serious lack of character.

From and outside perspective Mr. Hausler's comments are indeed the most salient relative to the issue. If he is supporting the police his interview did nothing to help their position nor dispel the accusations that have been made. One might suggest he strengthened the case by either his insensitivity or his attempt to be humorous.

Some of you folks need to admit that NEITHER party ran a decent candidate this past election & that the citizens of East Haven are being forced to choose the lesser of two evils.
Someone above said that we are better than this & he is right. For this mayor to just BEGIN to redeem himself he needs to take decisive action and clean house at the EHPD.
And for those of you who think the police officers are innocent - did you even read the indictment? This has nothing to do with illegal immigrants. Do you truly believe that every Hispanic person in the U.S. is an illegal alien or a criminal? Don't you realize that they could have just as easily targeted gay people, Jewish, Polish...whoever?

We need to see what the legal bills are thus far and in the future for gallos gross mismanagement and maturo's blind political allegiance to gallo. If you don't think this will cause a financial disaster for staven youre mistaken. And he hires a kid a few months out of law school to be the town attorney. Lol staven is a joke.

First of all the reporter is the real bigot here to ask such a bias question. “Latino community” really! What about the white, asian or black comunity. The real underlining problem is the Hispanic invasion which no one will talk about although they will call it everything that it isn’t. The fact is the majority of Hispanics are illegal aliens, they are foreign nationals stealing and cheating our citizens. The hate is not about ethnicity it is about their lawlessness and I would further ask what is not to hate about people who invade our country? P.S. The reporter should be fired.

His "apology" was totally disingenuous. He expressed his real feelings with the "taco" comment. This "apology" was totally scripted and only made him look worse.
Rob
7:26 pm on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
So what? Of course his apology is disingenuous. There is no reason for the man to apologize in the first place. He made the Taco comment because he was using dry humor, a craft that is totally lost on the overly sensitive whinealoholics among us. Just imagine if white heterosexual men pitched a fit every time somebody made an off handed comment that used a white heterosexal male as the ruse. Seriously now, what's wrong with going to a "Latino" owned business and buying something as a way to "support the Latino community"? What the interviewer was really fishing for was some sort of guilt-ridden gift to Latino's from the taxpayers wallet. Funny how you don't see Irish or Polish reporters crying down at town hall everytime someone of Irish or Polish extraction got a raw deal from the police.

Unfortunately, Mayor Maturo's "taco" comment has brought NATIONAL attention and
shame to the Town of East Haven. The right thing for Mayor Maturo to do is to resign and, then, this terrible situation will begin to disappear. It seems that Mayor Maturo has a propensity to generate negativity.

Do you feel the same way about April Capone's arrest? If you google her, you will see that when she was arrested as a mayor, it was on every major news network and newspaper in Connecticut and Youtube and encyclopedia.mitrasites.com. As we all know, the internet reaches the entire world. So how is that different?

ALL OF THE PROBLEMS we've had in EH the past few days can truely be pointed back to April, and her foul mouthed call to the EHPD (which generated NATIONAL attention--can't you remmeber that??) When they then arrested her, she sought revenge against EHPD. The DOJ and FBI investigations are a direct result of her cronies (aka EH Bd of Police Commissioners) letter writing to them.....4 cops wouldn't have been indicted, and therefore, there would have been no TACO comment. I personally think April should have resigned for her irresponsible spending and bonding......

It's amazing to me the people who blame April for everything in this town. This mess existed before she ever became mayor, and unless there is some change, it will just go on and on........instead of being haters just looks at the facts first.

Connie, I totally agree with you but these people are never going to look at the facts. I talk to lots of them every day and they are so totally entrenched in old prejudices, deep seated racism, and crony relationships that go way back, that they wouldn't know the truth if it jumped up and bit them. Half of this town (probably more who were just to complacent to vote) know that Mayor Capone was doing a great job and deserves non of the blame for any of this. Maturo led a very dishonest campaign and, unfortunately, elections matter, and in this case it has turned our town into a national joke. We can only hope he resigns soon and we can get on with the business of getting a real mayor.

Thank you Citizen Voice - it seems like it's just easier to spout off than actually understand what is happening. I'm honestly not on either side of the fence, but I know what i read and what i've seen, and it just seems like it's easy to blame the former administration, rather than sit down, look at the facts, admit if you possibly were wrong somehow, and try to fix it. Instead these comments back up what everyone thinks of East Haven anyway.

Speaking as someone who's been subjected to reverse bigotry by Hispanics in the workplace on three separate occasions, I say the ones who took offense to his comments need to stop being so thin-skinned. Hispanics discriminate and make racist comments about whites and Asians all the time. Being sensitive and thin-skinned over minor slights like this is what makes Hispanics racist against whites and Asians. Here in Los Angeles, an Anglo fan of the San Francisco Giants had his brains bashed in by racist Mexican-American Dodgers fans who were also gangbangers and he will be disabled for life just because he wore the wrong jersey to the game, aka, the wrong colors. Racist Hispanics were posting in the L.A. Times website saying "that gringo got what he deserved." However it's Hispanics who play the race card everytime they feel slighted.

You understand how it works. At the heart of it all lies jealousy. The minorities of this nation are incredibly jealous of the accomplishments of the white male. Sure, most white males are highly average, too; still, when you think of "brilliant" people, a vision of a white male pops into your head. The reason is simple -- over 90% of all the significant inventions and/or scientific developments of mankind have been accomplished by white males. I'm not anti-minority or anti-woman; but still, the facts are the facts. Polio vaccine -- white guy. E = mc-squared -- white guy. Automobile -- white guy. Steam engine -- white guy. Internal combustion engine -- white guy. Ultrasound surgery (instead of cutting people open) -- white guy. Camera -- white guy. Internet -- white guy. Computer -- white guy. Telephone -- white guy. Radio -- white guy. Television -- white guy. Sewing machine -- white guy. Light bulb -- white guy. Penicillin -- white guy. Commercial fabric dyes -- white guy (the color mauve). Thermometer -- white guy. MIcroscope -- white guy. Pencil -- white guy. Fountain pen -- white guy. Crayons -- white guy. Printing press -- white guy. Airplane -- white guy. Parachute -- white guy. Gun -- Chinese guy. Instant coffee -- Japanese guy. Gas mask -- black guy.

You are absolutely right. BUT the difference here is, the white guy had the knowledge, determination and work ethics to invent all of these things. I do not think ANYONE, no matter what color, race, culture, should be GIVEN anything. Makes one lazy. Jealousy is a great observation. You are right. White men and "oriental" men, have invented most things of today. Now, don't everyone flip out on me now but look at Africa....these people are still practicing hunting and gathering. They are still living as they did for hundreds maybe thousands of years. Nothing wrong with that. Actually, it's kind of refreshing if you have the stamina to live that way. lol I just feel that people are crucifying Maturo for a simple thing that, I'm sure because I know the man, was suppose to be a joke to "lighten up" the tension of the day. Maturo is NOT that kind of guy. Not at all. So sad. I still wonder why they are crucifying Maturo and there was some mention of resigning. Yet, a few years back, the Mayor of Washington, DC was caught with cocaine more than once and never did I see a mention of resignation and these people actually voted the guy back into office. Do you think it was because he was a black mayor that his cocaine possession and use wasn't that big of an issue? lol Geez What is this country coming to?

To Lise Cavallaro----
How can you compare the ramification of former Mayor April's incident to Mayor Maturo's lack of discretion. Former Mayor April attempted to help some ciitzens and,
Mayor Maturo brought a National black eye to East Haven. Don't you think the officer involved in the April incident acted for political advantage? That entire incident could have been avoided if the Officer wanted to use the microphone which was there for announcements? A multitude of people didn't clamor for her resignation. There's no comparison.
Lise Cavallaro
2:12 pm on Friday, January 27, 2012
East Haven was given a black eye because of the liberal media and their refusal to let it go. Did you ever say anything stupid or stick your foot in your mouth? Or are you perfect? Mayor April tried to help by interfering when she had no place doing so. She is not a police officer and shouldn't have interfered - let alone have her secretary helping her. This entire episode could have been and should have been fixed with an apology and the entire town could have moved on. The media and attention is only going to make tensions worse. Wait and see.

O, I agree Maturo was trying to make a joke to lighten the day's tension and he put his foot in his mouth...no doubt. But I also know that the NEW HAVEN REGISTER hates the Town Of East Haven and will DWELL on this issue to make Maturo or even if the Pope were mayor, look bad. Once there was a murder in the parking lot of Walmart on Route 80. Headlines of the NEW HAVEN REGISTER read: Murder in East Haven. Walmart IS NOT EVEN IN EAST HAVEN. lol It's in New Haven. That's how bright some of the reporters are for the Register. The Register is constantly looking to down East Haven. Amazing.

The entire town wasn't offended. I wasn't. My coworkers from surrounding towns and their neighbors (Clinton, Madison and North Haven) even said.."people really need to move on". I was shocked and embarassed, but he made a mistake and apologized. How about we call on the all mayors and governors, president sor vice presidents to resign everytime they stick their foot in their mouth or make a mistake. I suggest everyone take a hint from Sugar..do something nice and move on.

I keep seeing comments here referring to April being arrested
And no one will put in writing here why she was arrested
That day the police decided to tow cars at the beach
They do have loud speakers and such did they use them and ask the owners to move the cars ? I was not there that day but It was nice to see some one cared .
I know a tow bill would ruin my budget for a week or so.
So she got in a heated argument with the police for towing cars.
Wow crime of the year?
Rosie
7:19 am on Friday, February 3, 2012
No, not crime of the year. April just showed her disdain and complete disrespect for our police department, and that vendetta got us where we are today. As a Mayor, just like Joe, she should have shown a little more decorum.
Dan
7:52 am on Friday, February 3, 2012
No, what got us where we are today is police brutality, illegal search and seizure and targeting of Latinos by some police officers. Even if you believe April's arrest was justified, you can't make a connection to the current crisis here in town and any attempt to do so is just a smoke screen.

Jacobo,
you may call to question my literacy all you wish. I am plenty familiar with the book you reference. You can honor Che all you want and while his intentions may have started honorably, for the good of his people, they were none the less tainted exponentially by the evil into which it morphed.
Or are you a fan of Fidel as well?
In my mind the "perception" of what are or what were good intentions by any individual, can be championed or mistaken by others. It depends I guess from which side of the argument (or the deed) you choose to fall.
I for one believe in "innocent until proven guilty".
These officers deserve OUR support and there are many among us who will.
I am also literate enough to grasp YOUR RACIST comment aimed at Italian Americans.
Good Day
