March to End Violence Against Latinos

A march looking to bring the "end of violence against Latino residents and a path to justice in East Haven" will be held here on Feb. 25.

Update on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

The peaceful march on Feb. 25 is being organized by a newly formed East Haven-based group called "Community Immigrants of East Haven."

According to the organization's president, who spoke to East Haven Patch this morning, the event is being held in hopes of unifying and bringing the community together to create "path for justice and a path for reconciliation" for all the town's residents.

The group currently has some 130 members, and it's leadership was elected Feb. 9.

East Haven Patch will have a full update on the new East Haven organization following today's press conference announcing the new Interim East Haven Chief of Police.

Update at 9:30 p.m.

Werner Oyanadel contacted East Haven Patch a short time ago to clarify that he has volunteered to help publicize the march "on my free time," and not in his official capacity as the acting executive director of the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission.

Oyanadel added that event organizers include state Rep. Juan Candelaria, the Democratic deputy majority whip from New Haven, and John Lugo from Unidad Latina en Accion

East Haven Patch will continue to provide updates on this story as we talk with Candelaria, Lugo and others about the upcoming march.

Original Story (Monday at 8:30 p.m.)

A peaceful march "for an end of violence against Latino residents and a path to justice in East Haven" will take place here Feb. 25, according to a post on Facebook.

The announcement, shared earlier today on the Facebook wall of East Haven Taxpayers Calling for Mayor Maturo to Resign, was written by Werner Oyanadel.

Oyanadel is the acting executive director of the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission, which is an independent and non-partisan public policy agency that advises the governor's office and the General Assembly.

Who Is Organizing?

It is unclear at this time if the march is being organized by the LPRAC, or another unrelated group. Oyanadel did not immediately return a call this evening to his Hartford office from East Haven Patch.

The state commission, however, did call for East Haven Mayor Maturo's resignation after the well-publicized taco comment the mayor made to a WPIX television reporter Mario Diaz following the arrest earlier that day of four East Haven Police officers for alleged civil rights violations against Latino residents and others.

'For Dignity'

According to Oyanadel, the march will begin next Saturday at the McDonalds on Main Street, starting at 11 a.m. Participants are asked to dress in white clothing and bring an American Flag.

"¡Todos somos la marcha! ¡Por la dignidad y respeto a los derechos humanos! — For dignity and respect for human rights," Oyanadel wrote in Spanish as part of his post.

"Please help us forward this message in solidarity to our friends in East Haven," he added.

East Haven Patch will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Please support the effort to remove Mayor Maturo. Civil rights are being violated and if one persons' rights are compromised all of our rights are jeopardized. This reign of terror needs to end and the lack of response by the local and state government can not be supported. I have not seen or heard a direct response to the civil right violations by our governer or representatives. Stand for justice and we will benefit with peace.

Jayne, the only rights being violated are those of American Citizens!!! If New Haven was not a sanctuary city for illegals, none of these problems would be occuring. East Havener's are sick of people like you (that don't even live in our town) bashing the Mayor & the PD.

And here is a nugget for you. Read the requirements under Mexican law if immigration laws are violated. See where if found in the country illegally, go to jail, no sending home until after jail time is finished., no social handouts, no welfare, no help in paying rent. See where it is required to be self sustaining financially. Then after reading the Mexican law read ours and compare that to what the US really does.

Mr Poulton, I'm not sure what your point is in regard to the topic at hand. Your "nugget" about the immigration policies of the narco terrorist Mexican government is irrelevent to a Latino march in East Haven demanding an end to violence. Are you saying that Miller and his boys would have carte blanche if they were in the Mexican DFS????

Hey Jane, you want to remove Maturo? He just became mayor. His only mistake in this was saying he'd have tacos for dinner. All of the alleged violations happened under April. And what violence? Being stopped for breaking the law? Like the poor man arrested in branford yesterday for having a stolen car.

Jayne, there has been no real proof of any civil rights being violated as of yet the courts have not met on the issue. Why remove a mayor when you have no idea what kind of job he will do. I feel I have civil rights also and don't want to see East Haven turn into another New Haven. Anyone leagally here has civil rights, if here illegally they have to be returned to where they came from. Our forefathers had to wait their turn to come here, and they built this great nation. Stop jumping the gun and accusing before all the cards are on the table.

You can infer racism on my part if you choose, but the way I read what's on this thread is that these folks who are asking for "Solidarity" are also calling for the Mayors head on a platter. I don't think that's going to "bring this town together" but will only help to separate people even further. So you want a lynch mob, do you?

The mayor's head IS on a platter (old Roman tradition, by the way). Four months into his term and already he's a LAME DUCK. The party bigwigs are looking for "alternatives" behind the scenes. "What If" scenerios are being looked at. The best Taco Joe can possibly hope for is to quietly retire at the end of his term and avoid being hauled away in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit.

And yes, bringing up lynchings is racist. You, Luigi, are no better than any Latino.

100% Worse? Stupid? How so? Do you mean that racists will again show up there to throw watermelons (or will it be tacos this time)? This is exactly what happened before you know, when the black community tried to march in East Haven.

What's wrong with a peaceful march demanding justice and an end to violence? How could you not support this effort? Keep the racists home, off the streets and everything will be fine.

This simmering powderkeg of racism in East Haven will not go away until all demographic segments in town learn to understand and live with their fellow neighbors. We are in this together. DO THE RIGHT THING.

East Haven has raised issues about the quality of life. As in other cities, they ask for a stop to driving without permits, exploding school budgets, congregating on streets- these are not unreasonable. If East Haven was not predominately Italian, the democrat stooges that run the state would be more sympathetic to looking for a solution- but like O'Malley they just figure we are all a bunch of lower class types anyway, so why bother. Could you imagine what would happen if fifty people hung out outside the Yale University Law School with signs looking for work?

Latino activists would help their cause better if they dropped revolutionary rhetoric- i.E. adopting a revolutionary's name as a screen name. We are not all just dumb Italians here as some of the kids at Yale suppose- we do read history. It must be fun to have a real middle class town like East Haven to experiment with -- you know when you don't have to worry about how property values are going to affect your retirement, or how school taxes are eating up your budget.

Stop the violence against Latino's? I don't believe i saw any brutally harmed arrested criminals of any decent. I believe these are ALL allegations. How many of these so called Latino's have pulled out of this ridiculous lawsuit? How many will be prosecuted for perjury ? I have been a resident of East Haven for 25 years and have NEVER heard such garbage. how many of these marchers will actually be from OUR COMMUNITY? How many non Latino residents have been pulled over in our town? I have about a half dozen times no big deal. take my ticket and go even if I thought it was ridiculous. I figured they are only doing their jobs. I have raised my children here and have had many of the cops on duty stop and encourage the kids to stay on the right path and some have also played ball with them. That's what I call good cops! I'm so tired of all the bad media coverage about east haven why not anything good? As far as "illegals" guess what our schools do..they teach the children one on one to speak our language that they cant speak in order to learn in our schools. Why because the "illegals" cant speak the AMERICAN language! Come here to our country the right way come speaking the language obtain your legal status pay your taxes and such...enough is enough! Stop all the complaining and do what is RIGHT. Everyone needs to let this blow over and carry on with their lives!

You won't get your way, sorry.
The Mayor will stand firm and many are grateful.

You do have another possibility, move out of town with your husband and you'll have nothing more to concern yourself with in East Haven.

I'm thinking, Branford would welcome you both!

There's still the other option though......move, laugh your way outta town.

How to Protect Your Rights:

•Always be calm & cool. A bad attitude guarantees a bad outcome. If you keep your cool, chances are the officer will too.
•Don’t confess to wrongdoing. Police aren't looking for an explanation; they're looking for evidence. Remain silent instead.
•Don’t lie to cops. Cops may lie to you, but you can’t lie to them. Remain silent instead.
•Cops can lie; don't get tricked. Don't let false threats or promises trick you into waiving your rights.
•You can refuse searches. Saying "no" to searches is your constitutional right and probably your best move. Agreeing to searches hurts your case, even if police find something that isn’t yours.
•Ask if you're being detained or are free to go. Doing this shows that you're not agreeing to the police stop. This will protect you later if you end up in court.
•Don't expose yourself. Vandalizing property or doing illegal drugs in public are easy ways to find yourself in jail. “Safety in numbers” won’t protect you.
•Never touch a cop. Keep your hands to yourself. Aggressive actions will only earn you a more aggressive response.
•Don’t argue; report misconduct later. If you plan to sue or complain, don't tell the officer.

Finally, something well said from Mr. Arbenz. But he forgot to mention a few very important things: One, a full search of a person is authorized incident to an arrest. Pat downs are OK for the protection of an officer or third party. That's a pat down not an in the pocket search. Unless what is felt could be construde as a weapon. There are many, that's many, US Supreme Court decison covering this topic. Read some, like Carrrol or Richardson.

Remember Mr. Poulton, what goes around, comes around. Karma. There will come a day in the not too distant future when you yourself will be "Patted Down" by a Latino Officer. For the "protection of an officer or third party," of course. This, of course, will turn into a search if you are carrying your weapon. Be prepared to abey orders and to present your papers. Follow the advice above and all will go well for you.

This is just getting ridiculous. Countries all over the world encourage schools to teach the english language even if they don't plan on becoming citizens. If you are choosing to come to this country you should choose to embrace the culture you're entering in which English is the first language and the language spoken in schools. Do the latino marchers who are marching against the police dept expect the police to protect them with their march??? Also, if they are so discriminated against in East Haven, why do they have a business on every corner of Main St? Why can't we not see the police reports on the results of what they found when they stopped them in their cars. So much gray matter. It looks like the latinos want to dictate their own rules and regulations. How come the New Haven Register when they showed the picture in the convenience store did not zone in on the two guys trying to take the license plates off the wall????????? Ms Camera and Mr.Perillo- Unfortunately, it is OK to stereotype East Haven as a city of "strip malls" where wives seduce their husbands for "chump change". Well, after all, as the AP likes to say this is an "Italian enclave" after all. Meanwhile, a young girl can die operating a lathe at Yale; the Justice Department can investigate Yale for sexual discrimination; and then the Democrat Governor of CT can allocate 250 million dollars for this same University to create business incubators. The Justice Department has intervened on the side of the undocumented persons. The president of Yale. The Catholic Church. The Governor. The Democratic Party of CT- which runs the state. The Yale Law School, with millions of dollars behind it- tax exempt of course. Who can really believe that - except the "intellectuals" at Yale- that the this this march represents a protest against intimidation and fear. It is simply a situation where liberals expect middle class people to take a huge infusion of people into their community and pay the costs- much like a rich person expects the "help" to pay for the bus on the way to clean their house. I have never seen anything as ridiculous as groups with names like "junta" in them, or bloggers with screen names of dead Swiss revolutionaries, pretending that they are in danger or fighting fascism.

Citizen,

The old line in East Haven won't be at the march. Lame excuses will be given; the real reason being their inherent racism. Old ways die hard. It's always been this way, at least since '71 when I moved here. The demographic changes in recent years have brought out the seething intolerance. Maturo is only a symptom of the disease affecting the older East Haven populace.

What is encourgaging to me is the younger people in town who actually interact on a daily basis with all minorities. They are much more tolerant and understanding of the plight and needs of the oppressed peoples of the world. Many will jokingly tell you "My dad is so racist.." That's the way things are in East Haven. Things will get better in East Haven. It will take some time though.

Marches are a part of our national history. Remember the marches for civil rights in the 60's. Well now history is repeating itself and it is time for the Hispanics to march for their civil rights like the black people once did. They are protected by the Constitution of our great nation.

You compare the civil right marches of the blacks to this march of the latinos. The blacks were LEGAL. The main groups of those who will be marching tomorrow will be ILLEGALS. The definition of ILLEGAL is "contrary to or forbidden by law,"
by the dictionary. Making all the excuses in the world does not change this definition they are not citizens and don't deserve the rights of citizens of the USA.
Now all the agitators and the socialists, marxists can come back and tell me what a racist I am. I could care less since I am sick and tired of all the junk from people like Jocobo, Cajones, Becki, FCF etc. Becki you for one say "your ex-husband's Grandparents came here legally, were citizens. "
Notice that one word LEGALLY that is what makes the difference between your grandparents and these illegals. They don't care to learn English or take the time to become citizens and why should they when they get health care social security etc without being citizens. They can dip and dip and not contribute.
Go to the Hill Health center and the other health centers some day and see all the Latinos pregnant and with two three and four small children hanging on the mothers all getting free health care. Sure give them care but it has become a scourge on the taxpayer and the country. Billions a year are given to ILLEGALS and then towns like East haven are treated like they are the racist towns in the country by a bunch of little sneaky agitators like some on this web site.

@Don Charles I was at the rally today and I met with many many people there and there were very very few who were not citizens or here on visas and none were "illegal" that in and of itself is a racist assumption that was part of why today's march was so important. Once you begin to realize that the majority of people (including my own children) are either American born citizens of hispanic descent or they came to this country legally that will begin the healing process. And by the way, how would the business owners who were harassed in EH be illegal? Kind of hard to have a business if you are illegally here.

Hey Rosie with what is going on right now in East haven, sure comical comments would be fun to read, however you have a bunch of agitators like those I mentioned and then this so called comic Cajones comes in and says that junk. Sure he is all over the park with his comments but he/she should have more sense in what he/she posts.
I read what I read and took offense. There is such a thing as being sarcastic or being a pot stirrer. in this case he/she is a pot stirrer and this is dangerous with all these out of town agitators coming into town. some people are saying that East Haven has been a town of harassment for years and this is a full out lie. Where has there been harassment, violence etc over the years. some people should realize that the feds, the juntas, the hatful politicians are all quite happy about what is going on. They needed a scapegoat and they have one.
Sorry his words are what causes problems with people who believe him/her.
No apologies to Cajones.

For those of you who don't get it...CAjones is an agitator. What he/she is doing is posting in Spanish some of the most radical statements he/she knows would rile up people. Think "dog whistle". "IT" wants you to believe that he/she is a person of Hispanic/Latino descent. Ignore it.

There is an old saying, if you are part of the problem you cannot be part of the solution. Maturo is a big part of the problem and the best thing for our town to move forward is for him to step down. He brought back Gallo after two weeks in office, let him leave with 100k of tax payers money, he did not realize what the FBI investigation was all about, and he does not realize the Latino community in East Haven is here to stay, so he doesn’t respect the fact that there are many legal immigrants that live in this town. He has put this town on the front page and on TV screens around the world day after day, he has helped this town to get a terrible image, that as long as he is in that seat East Haven will never get rid of. For the good of this town he must step down and take his whole office staff with him. The good people of this town have had enough of his arrogance.
Good by Taco Joe.

Thank you Mike. The rally was great and peaceful and the overall chants including asking Mayor Maturo to resign. Wish that more EH residents joined us....

Don Charles I don't know who you are but I am neither a hater nor a sore losing politician. Just a person who is sick over what this town has become over the last few months. Thanks for the correction to my spelling.
Good BYE Taco Joe. Now I hope that is better for you to understand, Don Charles.

Okay Mike so you are not a hater etc. however Taco Joe just makes you as small as the haters. You should be sick about what is happening in your town, but to join the haters and call the Mayor a slur name is not needed.
Sure he was led down the path by a reporter from the news channel, sure he was stupid to answer as he did. Many people have made dumb comments when they shouldn't have yet are not continually ostracized for their comments as your mayor.
Every day the tv , radio and the Ragister has an article or a comment about East Haven, they love what is going on, if they spent as much time on the real problems like the politicians in Hartford and DC then we would all be more informed as to what is rally happening with our state and country.

Karen YOU are the hater that Don Charles is looking for, this present Mayor brought the news to East Haven with bringing Gallo back and his handling of the news media. When the past mayor said, as the Good Captain Blood points out "No Comment" people like you made remarks, but it is now obvious, that comment was the right thing to do, until the investigation the FBI is holding comes to an end.
Hold on to your boot straps if you think the 17% to delete the debt the town had was bad, because the next tax increase is going to knock your sox off.

Karen, there is no such permit needed and/or available in the town of East Haven, but thank you for doing your homework. The organizers met with the Chief of Police and the Mayors office to organize a peaceful and safe march. The March (which I participated in) was both peaceful and safe. Again, no permit needed and no illegals were involved in the march or the organization of same.

Poor Karen Did i say anything about illegal or legal?
No i did not.
Its an issue in this Country and East Haven will not solve it.
So what your telling me if someone who may not talk or look like you is illegal.
You hate it so much but you seem to live with the fact that as long as its not me then its bad for the Country.
I am sure you go out to eat at time's well do your self a favor next time your eatting that nice meal out go into the Kitchen and Check ID, Check ID when your trash is picked up, check when your grass is being cut or when your car is washed..
Its about greed my friend and someone who will exploit hard working Men and Woman and not care how they got to this Country.
So do not blame everyone you see and put a label on them.
They are People like us., just looking for a better life.
But then i can be wrong and you may be the one to solve the problem.
Think hard myfriend if April was the Mayor today would there be a March?

PATRIOT

Captain Blood, You are a traitor to your Town & Country. Why would you keep supporting the criminals that keep entering our Country illegally ? Why would you continue to blame the America citizens that are now fed up with these people that will never accept the laws of our land ?? Why do you support these illegals that refuse to assimulate to our culture ? Maybe, it is you & your friends that are the Town's biggest problem. Maybe you can start blaming George W Bush, just saying.!

What did Matt Lyons mean when he spoke of the American flag being on the ground?
Was this done at the march of the latino's and was it on purpose?

Matt Lyons

2:21 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2012

I was watching the live feed on nhregister.com. They had a banner with many countries flags including the US. This banner was laid on the ground in the center of the rally in the park. That is a federal offense to deface the flag.

Matt Lyons

2:23 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2012

Plus people were letting their kids walk on the banner.

That is because ILLEGALS have no respect for our flag...after all, it is NOT their country...they only use it for what they can get. Disrespect, that's all it is. And people like Jacobo will have a lame excuse for this one. Come on Jacobo, so quiet today. As far away as you can be, right?? What's the excuse???

Captain Blood

What a sad person the PATRIOT, I just tell it like it is.
Low wages my friend thats how it all starts.
I only support the ones who are being used.
I have an idea lets deport anyone who hires someone who is not here Legally.
See how fast the problem may start to go away.

I especially love the sign "we are all immigrants". Yes, that is true, only most of us, or our families, came here LEGALLY, the right way. That is the BIG difference, that is the problem, and that is why discrimination exists. Do it the right way, and there is no problem.

Don Charles

4:35 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2012

Matt that was to be expected. Look at any rally of ILLEGALS and you will see the flags of other countries including Hammer and Sickle and the red star. It just goes to show you what is thought of by these leaches, yes leaches are what the illegals are. There is no one who can defend their illegality although many try. If they would learn the language and take the tests and become citizens then they would be entitled to what the citizens of the USA get and have, I doubt if it will come to this since the bleeding hearts and those that feel they are good for our nation want them here so they can change the tide of power.
