[UPDATED] Van Strikes Bicycle Killing Rider in Fatal East Haven Crash

The bicyclist struck by the passenger van on Coe Avenue was later pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital, according to East Haven Police.

Update at 4:15 p.m.

The bicyclist involved in the accident earlier today has died.

According to Sgt. David Emerman, at about 11:49 a.m., officers responded to a serious motor vehicle accident in the area of Ocean Port Market, at 50 Coe Avenue.

"Initial investigation indicates that a Toyota Sienna minivan traveling southbound on Coe Avenue collided with a bicyclist," Emerman stated in a press release this afternoon. "The Toyota minivan then collided with a telephone pole and rolled onto its side."

The bicyclist was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Emerman said the name is being withheld until notifications are made.

The three passengers from the minivan were transported to Yale New Haven Hospital and St. Raphael’s Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Emerman aded that Coe Avenue will remain closed between Dewey Avenue and Cold Spring Avenue, as well as the intersection of Coe Avenue and Soundview Avenue, for investigation and utility repair. 

"East Haven Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction team has been sent to the scene and their investigation is ongoing," Emerman stated.

Four people were sent to the hospital after a passenger van struck a bicyclist — and then an utility pole — while traveling along Coe Avenue in East Haven late this morning.

The accident, which occured at about 11:50 a.m., took place near the busy roadway's intersection with Wilkenda Avenue.

Assistant Chief Chuck Licata told East Haven Patch that the three people traveling in the van were taken to the hospital for "moderate injuries."

Licata said the person riding the bike, however, sustained more serious injuries during the crash.

"Their injuries were significant. I'd say critical," he said.

Licata added that members of the currently have Coe Avenue closed between Soundview and Bradford as their investigators conduct an accident reconstruction at the scene.
